Joseph Gilliland

M, #2744, b. between 1776 and 1794, d. circa 25 February 1819
Last Edited=29 Jul 2018
Joseph Gilliland was born between 1776 and 1794.1 There was a Joseph Gilliland who appeared on the 1810 Federal Census for Jefferson, Rutherford County, Tennessee with a household listed as two free white males under 10, one free white male 10-15, one free white male 45 and over, two free white females under 10, one free white female 10-15, one free white female 16-25, and one free white female 45 and over.2 Could this have been this Joseph's father? If this Joseph was born circa 1794, he could have been the free white male 10-15 listed in the census.

Joseph Gilliland married Eleanor Hill on 2 May 1812 at Rutherford County, Tennessee.3 Joseph enlisted as a private in Captain Sturgis' Company, 24th U.S. Infantry, on May 1, 1814 in the War of 1812. He was discharged on July 19, 1815.4 Joseph Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Franklin township, Floyd County, Indiana, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 10-15, one male 26-44, one female under 10, and one female 26-44 with two persons engaged in agriculture.1

According to the 1812 Widow's Pension that Eleanor applied for on November 8, 1850, Joseph died on February 25, 1819. But he was found on the 1820 Federal census record for Franklin township, Floyd County, Indiana. Either the census was taken early or the pension records are incorrect.1

Joseph Gilliland died circa 25 February 1819 at Indiana.4

Eleanor Hill1

F, #2745, b. circa 1796, d. 30 October 1874
Last Edited=1 Aug 2018
Eleanor Hill was born circa 1796 at Kentucky.2 She married Joseph Gilliland on 2 May 1812 at Rutherford County, Tennessee.1 Eleanor Hill was probably the female age 26 to 44 listed in the household of her husband, Joseph Gilliland, in the 1820 Federal Census of Franklin township, Floyd County, Indiana.3

Eleanor Hill appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana, with a household listed as one male 10-14, one male 15-19, one female 10-14, and one female 30-39.4 On December 15, 1830, Eleanor was the highest bidder on some land that went up for auction in Floyd County. She purchased the E½ of the SW¼ of Section 35 in Township 1S, Range 5E, consisting of 80 acres, for $306.5 On April 1, 1836, Eleanor sold 160 acres, the description being the SW¼ of Section 35, Township 1S, Range 5E, to Daniel Resor for $1000. (I could not find a deed where she acquired the additional 80 acres unless Joseph did before Floyd County was created and the deed is either in Clark or Harrison County.)6 On April 1, 1837, Eleanor purchased Lot #3 in the Town of Maxwell in Floyd County from William and Melasent Greenwood for $250 (I could not locate a town by the name of Maxwell in Floyd County on an 1859 map.)7 Then on May 28, 1838, Eleanor sold this lot in Maxwell to David Ingles for $500.8

On November 8, 1850, Eleanor appeared before a Justice of the Peace in Rutherford County, Tennessee to make a declaration as to her right to receive bounty land, by an Act passed on September 28, 1850, that she was entitled to for Joseph's service in the War of 1812. William Pope was one of the witnesses that testified that he knew both the claimant, Eleanor, and her husband, Joseph, and that they were married in his immediate neighborhood and lived together as man and wife.9

Eleanor Hill appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Jefferson County, Kentucky, enumerated 29 August 1870.2 On November 21, 1871, Eleanor appeared before a Notary Public in Floyd County, Indiana to swear an oath that she, "at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort, or exercised the functions of any office, under any authority or pretended authority, in hostility to the United States, and that I will support the Constitution of the United States". This oath was required in order for her to apply for a widow's pension, War of 1812, under Act #1411 of February 14, 1871.9 On May 8, 1872, Eleanor and two witnesses, Abigal Brown and Mary Miller, appeared in Floyd County, Indiana to supply additional evidence for her claim. At that time, Eleanor was living at the County Poor House in Louisville, Kentucky.9

Eleanor Hill died on 30 October 1874.9

James Gilliland1

M, #2754, d. before January 1815
Last Edited=13 Apr 2019
This person belongs to DNA Group 2
Group 2 List
James Gilliland married Elizabeth ?2,3 James Gilliland died before January 1815 at Rutherford County, Tennessee.4,1 William Pope was made administrator of his estate.5

James Gilliland appears to be the father of Joel Gilliland and his siblings based on the following evidence:

On July 19, 1815, 50 acres of land (which was surveyed on March 7, 1814) situated on the waters of Stewart Creek on Stones River (located about 20 miles northwest of Murfreesboro near present day Smyrna) was granted to the heirs of James Gilliland.6

On September 30, 1831, John Denny sold 50 acres of land, situated on the waters of Stewart Creek of Stones River, to Robert Denny for $425. This was the land that was originally granted to James Gilliland's heirs on July 19, 1815.7 Previously, on May 21, 1829, these same 50 acres were sold to John Denny by Lewis & James Bobbett.8 And prior to that, those 50 acres were sold to Lewis Bobbett by Joel Gilliland, probably in 1824 (recorded in the Direct Index to Deeds, 1804-1840, Rutherford County, TN but the actual deed itself in Book S, page 2 is missing.)
There is a possibility that James and Elizabeth had at least two other sons. The first - Joseph Gilliland. Joseph was married in Rutherford County to Eleanor Hill in 1812. And in 1850 after Joseph was dead Eleanor appeared in court in Rutherford County to make a declaration as to her right to receive bounty land that she was entitled to for Joseph's service in the War of 1812. William Pope was one of the witnesses that testified that he knew both the claimant, Eleanor, and her husband, Joseph, and that they were married in his immediate neighborhood and lived together as man and wife. William Pope was the administrator of James Gilliland's estate in 1815.

The second - John Gilliland. John appeared in the 1840 Federal Census of Gibson County, Tennessee, living next to Joel Gilliland and Joel's sister Millie Arnold.
