Thomas Gilleland was born on 8 August 1821 at Tennessee.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Gilleland and Martha ?2,3 Thomas Gilleland was probably the male age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Samuel Gilleland, in the 1830 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois.4 Thomas Gilleland married Ann Scroggins on 13 December 1838 at Greene County, Illinois.5 I could not find Thomas on the 1840 census. There is the possibility that he, Ann, and their two young children were living in another household, possibility her parents, at the time. Ann died sometime prior to December 30, 1844.

Thomas Gilleland married Lucinda Ford on 30 December 1844 at Greene County, Illinois.6,7 Thomas Gilleland and Lucinda Ford appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of New Madrid County, Missouri, enumerated 4 September 1850. Their children J. V. and Eliza were listed as living with them, as were Larkin and Nancy, Thomas's children from his marriage to Ann Scroggins; and Henry Ford, age 18, possibly a brother to Lucinda.8 Lucinda died on January 2, 1859.9 Thomas Gilleland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois, enumerated 27 July 1860. His children Nancy, Eliza, James, Abraham and Lafayette were listed as living with him.2 Also living with him was his mother, Martha, an adopted daughter, Susan Miller, age 13, son Larkin and his wife Eliza, and David Hill who was the son of Jonathan and Mary Gilleland Hill.2 Thomas appeared on the 1865 State Census for Woodville township, Greene County, Illinois, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 10-19, one male 20-29, one male 40-49, one female 10-19, and one female 70-79.10

Thomas Gilleland married Nancy Ann Barrett after 1865.11

Thomas Gilleland married Anne Elizabeth Leopard Richard on 28 March 1867 at Greene County, Illinois.11,12 (See note at Anne Elizabeth's page.) On April 2, 1872, Thomas made out his will. He bequeathed to his wife (name not given) his land described as the N½ of the NE¼ of section 23 in Township 9, Range 13W in Greene County. (See this map taken from the 1873 Atlas for Greene County showing where this plot of land would be.) In 1839, Samuel Gilliland purchase 40 acres of public land (NW¼NE¼) of section 24, Township 9N, Range 13W.3 I believe that Samuel was Thomas' father and have listed him as such.

Thomas Gilleland died on 16 April 1872 at Greene County, Illinois, at age 50.1 He was buried at Cummings Cemetery, Woodville township, Greene County, Illinois.1 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)
