John Shields Gilleylen1,2

John Shields Gilleylen was born on 22 May 1790 at South Carolina.3,4,2 He was the son of Jacob Gilleylen and Agnes Shields.1 He moved with his mother and siblings to Washington County, Tennessee shortly after his father died and was there by 1803 when his mother was re-married to Michael Woods.5 There's a possibility that John moved to Giles County, Tennessee as there was a John "Gillyland" on the tax lists for the year 1812 (possibly Capt. Thomas K. Gordon's List; appears to be predominantly Brick Church and Elk Ridge Church area, but also Robertson's Fork). This may also be where he married Rebecca.6

John Shields Gilleylen married Rebecca Cook.7 According to census data, their first three children were born in Tennessee and they were in Alabama by the year 1822 when their son John Shields, Jr. was born. I have been unable to find him on the 1830 census record.

John Shields Gilleylen appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Monroe County, Mississippi, with a household listed as one male 10-14, one male 15-19, two males 20-29, one male 40-49, two females under 5, one female 5-9, two females 10-14, and one female 40-49.3 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Monroe County, Mississippi, enumerated 15 November 1850. His daughter Bedora C. was listed as living with him, as was his daughter, Nancy S. Thornley, and her children.4 John Shields Gilleylen appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Monroe County, Mississippi, enumerated 10 July 1860. His son James M. was listed as living with him, as was James' wife and children.8 John Shields Gilleylen died on 28 May 1869 at Monroe County, Mississippi, at age 79.2 He was buried at Gilleylen Cemetery, Hatley, Monroe County, Mississippi.2

A copy of John's will was included in the June term 1869 Probate Court records.9 Note: The complete probate file for John can be found at FamilySearch.org (Mississippi, Probate Records, 1781-1930 -> Monroe -> Probate packets 1821-1916 no 1385-1422, starting with image 1335). The following paper was included which lists the heirs of John at the time of his death.10
