Gallery Label : A native of Ireland, Gilliland enlisted as a young man in the British army. By 1754 he was already in the Colonies, serving in the French and Indian Wars. A few years later he established himself as a merchant in New York and began to purchase real estate, acquiring enormous acreage in Vermont where he established a settlement called Milltown. This portrait was painted in New York presumably while the artist was in debtor's prison.
     William Gilliland was born circa 1734 at County Armagh, Ireland.1 He was the son of ? Gilliland and Jane ? He enlisted in the army and was discharged in Philadelphia in 1758, from the 35th regiment of the line, after a service of four years.2 William Gilliland married Elizabeth Phagan on 8 February 1759.2 William Gilliland died on 2 February 1796 at Clinton (now Essex) County, New York.3,4 He was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Willsboro, Clinton (now Essex) County, New York.3

Note: The Bible entry for Mary's birth was listed as October 17, 1819. Her death was listed as "Mary Elmore Gilliland died Wednesday 31 January 1827 - at 20 minutes after 12 o'clock P.M. - of a painful and lingering disorder which she bore with uncommon fortitude for her years. Aged 8 yrs. 3 mo. & 14 days." Subtracting her age from her death date would make her birth date October 17, 1818 not 1819.
