Robert S. Gilliland1

M, #2254, b. 5 May 1804, d. 23 March 1877
Last Edited=30 Jul 2018
Robert S. Gilliland was born on 5 May 1804 at Tennessee.1,2,3 He married Sarah ?2 On September 29, 1834 Robert purchased 110 acres of land, on the western bank of Flat Creek, in Overton County, Tennessee from Thomas Davis, Sr.4 Robert S. was listed on the 1836 tax list for Overton County, Tennessee in District #3.5 He was also listed on the 1837 tax list.5 On February 13, 1837 he purchased another 120 acres on the waters of Lick Creek (waters of Roaring River) in Overton County, Tennessee from a Mr. John McCord.6 Then on December 30, 1839 Robert sold those 120 acres. By that time he and his family were living in Jackson County, Alabama.7

Robert S. Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Jackson County, Alabama, with a household listed as one male 5-9, one male 30-39, two females under 5, one female 5-9, and one female 30-39.8 On November 16, 1841, the state of Tennessee granted to Robert jointly with William and Samuel Hardy, 500 acres of land in Overton County on the Dry Fork of Mill Creek. This was from entry #1407 of December 8, 1835.9

Robert S. Gilliland and Sarah ? appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Jackson County, Alabama, enumerated 7 November 1850. Their children James E., Mary, Sarah E. and Malinda were listed as living with them.10 On December 1, 1859, Robert purchased 98.5 acres of public land in Jackson County, Alabama its description being the E½ of the NE¼ of Section 2 of Township 1, Range 8E.11 Here is an early township map showing Robert's land as well as the land of other Gillilands in Jackson County.

Robert S. Gilliland and Sarah ? appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Jackson County, Alabama, enumerated 4 June 1860. Their children Sarah E. and Malinda were listed as living with them.2

On September 1, 1860, Robert, along with William J. Price, William J. Hughes, and Oliver E. Hughes purchased 40 acres of public land in Jackson County, it's description being the NE¼ of the NW¼ of Section 14, Township 1, Range 8E.12 William J. Hughes was the husband of Sallie P. Gilliland (the daughter of James Gilliland) and William J. Price was most likely the son of the William J. Price who was made guardian of some of James' children.

Robert S. Gilliland and Sarah ? appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bridgeport, Jackson County, Alabama, enumerated 28 June 1870.13 Also living with them was Finis E. Gilliland, age 1, born in Alabama and Mary Gilliland, age 22, born circa 1848 in Kentucky, listed as a Domestic Servant.13

Robert S. Gilliland married Nancy Jane Hughes on 30 July 1871 at Jackson County, Alabama.14

On October 31, 1873, Robert filed a claim with the federal government for $899.85 to reclaim some of the cash and property that was taken from him during the months of August and September of 1863 by the "Rebels" during the Civil War. In his claim Robert made mention of his only son who was conscripted by the rebels and died soon after. He also talked about the abuse that he and his family underwent by the Rebel forces. He was eventually awarded $657.00.1 This claim makes for interesting reading and I have attached it in several .pdf files as it is quite large.

On March 21, 1877, Robert S. made out his Last Will & Testament. In it he mentioned his children Susan Tabitha Gilliland, Susan Hornbeck, and the heirs of James E. Gilliland and Mary Blair.15

Robert S. Gilliland died on 23 March 1877 at Jackson County, Alabama, at age 72.15,3 (Robert's probate file states that he died on March 23, 1877 and his will was dated March 21st. His tombstone says he died on March 2nd which is obviously a mistake.) He was buried at Rocky Springs Cemetery, Rocky Springs, Jackson County, Alabama.3 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)
According to an article that appeared in the journal Jackson County Chronicles, Robert was the son of Alexander Gilliland. That's probably not true as there's more evidence to suggest that Robert W. Gilliland was Alexander's son. I believe that Robert S. was either the son of Robert Gilliland Jr. or Allen T. Gilliland.16

James Gilliland was the son of Thomas Gilliland and Mary Ann Galliher.1 There's a James Gillaland, age 25, living with his wife and children in Campbell County, Georgia in the 1850 census but I have no idea if this is the correct James. He is also there in the 1860 census, with second wife Mahuldah, under the name James Gilland. (Campbell was a county from 1828 to 1931. In 1870 part of it became Douglas County and in 1931 the remainder was ceded to Fulton County.) By 1870 the family is in Henderson County, Kentucky.
