Allen Gilliland1

M, #2062, b. circa 1804
Last Edited=7 Sep 2019
Allen Gilliland was born circa 1804 at Tennessee.2 (or possibly Alabama according to a descendant - Allen Gilliland born 1804, Alabama.) He was probably the son of James Gilliland and Elizabeth Burks.

Allen Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Pope County, Arkansas, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 15-19, one male 20-29, two females under 5, and one female 20-29.3

Allen Gilliland married Mary (Polly) Eubanks, daughter of John Eubanks and Patsy ?, on 24 November 1836 at Pope County, Arkansas.4

Allen Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Griffin township, Conway County, Arkansas, with a household listed as one male 5-9, one male 10-14, one male 15-19, one male 30-39, two females under 5, one female 5-9, one female 10-14, and one female 20-29.5

On August 15, 1844, Allen's father-in-law John Eubanks of Pope County, Arkansas "in consideration of the natural love and affection" which he had for his son-in-law and the sum of $1.00, conveyed to Allen his personal property which among other things consisted of a wagon, ten cows and calves, twenty-five head of young cattle, twenty head of sheep, forty head of hogs, and one horse, saddle, and bridle.6

On March 24, 1845, Allen purchased 40 acres of land in Pope County, its description being the SW¼ of the NW¼ of Section 32, Township 9N, Range 20W, from his father-in-law John Eubanks for $150.7 Then on May 17th, Allen bought an additional 80 acres from John Eubanks (the W½ of the SE¼ of Section 31, Township 9N, Range 20W) for $250. One of the witnesses was a T. J. Gilliland. This was possibly Thomas Jefferson Gilliland.8

On January 2, 1847, Allen and Polly sold the 40 acres and the 80 acres they had purchased in 1845 to a John Eubanks (either back to his father-in-law or possibly to a brother-in-law) for $150 and $250.9,10

Allen Gilliland and Mary (Polly) Eubanks appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Upshur County, Texas, enumerated 7 December 1850. Their children Malinda, Jefferson, John N. and Laura J. were listed as living with them, as were two of Allen's children from his first marriage, a son age 18, listed only as W. and a daughter Martha, age 15.11

In 1851, Allen was listed on the tax rolls for Upshur County, Texas showing he owned two horses and had some miscellaneous property for a total value of $125.12 In 1852 he was listed on the tax rolls as owning 4 horses and 16 head of cattle.12

By 1855, Allen and his family were in Hopkins County, Texas where he was listed on the tax rolls showing he owned miscellaneous property valued at $108.13 On April 15, 1856, Allen and Polly sold 160 acres in Pope County, Arkansas to Nelson K. Eubanks. The land was in three parcels: the SW¼ of the NW¼ of Section 32, Township 9N, Range 20W; The N½ of the SE¼ of Section 31, Township 9N, Range 20W; and the SE¼ of the SW¼ of Section 31, Township 9N, Range 20W.14 The 1858 tax rolls of Hopkins County showed Allen with 80 acres on Turkey stream valued at $80.13 In 1859, Allen was listed on the tax rolls for Hopkins County showing he owned 80 acres on Rock stream valued at $400.13

Allen Gilliland and Mary (Polly) Eubanks appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas, enumerated 29 June 1860. Their children Jefferson, John N., Laura J., Sarah F., Mary D. and Thomas were listed as living with them.2

In 1861, Allen was listed on the tax rolls for Hopkins County.13 I could not find Allen in the tax rolls for Hopkins County after 1861.
Based on the research I've done I believe that Allen was the guardian of James Carroll Gilliland mentioned in James Gilliland's probate records.
