James Gilliland was born on 30 August 1810 at Tennessee.1,2 He married Sarah Black.3 While I can't be exactly sure at this point, there was a James Gillerland that appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Carroll County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 20-29, one female under 5, one female 5-9, and one female 20-29, that fits with this James.4 He was probably the James Gilliland who was an evangelist for the district and who preached at the Roan’s Creek Church of Christ on February 19, 1846. (In 1870 when his daughter was married he was listed as "Elder Gilliland.")5

James Gilliland and Sarah Black appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Henry County, Tennessee, enumerated 25 September 1850. Their children John F., Elizabeth, Samuel G., Mary, Tabitha Jane, Alexander C., Emmantha and James were listed as living with them.1 Sometime after the spring of 1854, the family moved to Missouri. On May 2, 1859, James received a land patent for 40 acres of public land (described as the W½ of the NE¼, Lot/Trct 1, Section 5, Township 39N, Range 3W) in Crawford County, Missouri.6

James Gilliland and Sarah Black appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Liberty township, Crawford County, Missouri, enumerated 11 August 1860. Their children Tabitha Jane, Alexander C., Emmantha, William Thomas, James Henry and Benjamin M. were listed as living with them, as was a James Gillion (Gilliland), age 21.7 James Gilliland and Sarah Black appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Morris township, Carroll County, Missouri, enumerated 20 June 1870. Their children Tabitha Jane, Alexander C., William Thomas, James Henry and Benjamin M. were listed as living with them.8 James Gilliland and Sarah Black appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Carroll County, Missouri, enumerated 7 June 1880, living in the household of their son Alexander and his family.9 James Gilliland died on 24 June 1882 at Carroll County, Missouri, at age 71.2 He was buried at Smith Cemetery, Leslie township, Carroll County, Missouri.10,11,2
A descendant of this James Gilliland has a 29/32 DNA match with a descendant of the John Gilliland who married Charity Richardson.
