James Thomas Gillan1

James Thomas Gillan was born on 18 December 1875 at Illinois.2,1 He was the son of William Gillan and Ellen McClure.1 James Thomas Gillan appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Martin township, McLean County, Illinois in the household of his parents, William Gillan and Ellen McClure.1

James Thomas Gillan married Agnes B. Thompson on 8 September 1897 at McLean County, Illinois.3 James Thomas Gillan and Agnes B. Thompson appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Martin township, McLean County, Illinois, enumerated 13 June 1900. Their son William Robert was listed as living with them.4 James Thomas Gillan and Agnes B. Thompson appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Martin township, McLean County, Illinois, enumerated 28 April 1910. Their children William Robert, Nellie Ellen and Ethel were listed as living with them.5 James Thomas Gillan and Agnes B. Thompson appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Martin township, McLean County, Illinois, enumerated 3 February 1920. Their children William Robert, Ethel and Henry J. were listed as living with them.6 James Thomas Gillan and Agnes B. Thompson appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Martin township, McLean County, Illinois, enumerated 29 April 1930. Their son Henry J. was listed as living with them.7

James Thomas Gillan married Myra Gwin in August 1953.8

On June 16, 1955, James was ruled incompetent by a McLean County, Illinois Probate Court jury. The jury granted the petition for appointment of a conservator to manage his property which included about 720 acres of land valued at about $300,000. The petitioner was his grandson Henry Steinlicht, Jr., the son of his daughter Ethel. According to James' attorney, there was no trouble about his competency before his marriage to Myra Gwin. Apparently, after James married Myra he bought an expensive Cadillac and moved to Texas with her. Then Myra's brother, Richard Gwin, started taking out mortgages on the Gillan farm land. Interesting reading. I believe there was an appeal. Not sure how things turned out.8

James Thomas Gillan died in January 1957 at Dade County, Florida, at age 81.9 He was buried at Wiley Cemetery, Colfax, McLean County, Illinois.2 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)
