     James Gillan was born on 23 June 1823 at Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland.1 He was the son of George Gillan and Arslena "Anna" Warren.1

James Gillan married Sarah Jane McClure on 25 July 1843 at Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland.2 James Gillan and Sarah Jane McClure appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Tremont, Tazewell County, Illinois, enumerated 23 December 1850. Their children William, David, Anna Mary and Elizabeth "Eliza" were listed as living with them.3

On October 16, 1854, James purchased a tract of land in Tazewell County, Illinois from Richard and Martha Gill for $150 its description being the NE¼ of the SW¼ of Section 28, Township 24N, Range 3W.4 This tract was located right next to William Gillan. Was William related? Possibly an uncle? On October 4, 1855, James purchased that tract of land that William owned for $200.5

On February 26, 1856, James purchased 80 acres of land from William & Mary Jane Leech for $950 its description being the W½ of the SE¼ of Section 28, Township 24N, Range 3W.6

Their children William, Elizabeth "Eliza", David J., Margaret, Martha, James M., Ada "Addie", Eva and Jennie were listed as living with them.8 James Gillan and Sarah Jane McClure appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Martin township, McLean County, Illinois, enumerated 15 June 1880.
