John Gilliland

     On August 31, 1772, John purchased 200 acres of land in Amherst County, Virginia on Porrage Creek from Henry Tennison for 120£, the description being the following - beginning at John Tennison's corner at three red oaks and a chestnut sapling and with his line South one degree East one hundred and sixty(?) poles to a locust on Porrage Creek thence down the creek seventy-seven degrees East eighty poles to a spanish oak in the old line and with the old line South forty-two degrees West one hundred and ninety-four poles to ? then North thirty-nine degrees West two hundred and twenty-five poles to a white oak then north fifty-nine and a half degree East two hundred and twenty-three poles to the beginning containing two hundred acres and all houses, etc.1

On October 3, 1774, John was made administrator of the estate of Eleanor ? Gilliland, deceased, of Amherst County, Virginia. Hugh Gilliland and James Menees, Jr. were also bonded.2

These are the only records I could find for John in Amherst County and I could not find a deed for the sale of the land that he purchased in 1772.

He was born January 16, 1926 in Cushing, Oklahoma, the son of George and Esther (Freels) Gillen. He attended East High School. He first married Patricia Blakeney and they later divorced. On January 20, 1962 he married Elizabeth "Betty" Young.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

George is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Gillen; Four Daughters, Pamela L. (Laurine) Gillen, Mary E. (Robert) Baran, Esther K. (John) Johns and Diana D. Gillen; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and Many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by two Sons, Russell Gillen and George Gillen III; father, George Hamilton Gillen, Sr., mother, Esther Gillen, brother, Joseph Gillen and two sisters, Frances Gillen and Stella Dickson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be used for a dedication bench at Del Mar Park.
