Hugh Gilliland

M, #18113
Last Edited=10 Dec 2019
On September 6, 1773, Hugh, of Amherst County, Virginia, purchased 100 acres of land on Porage Creek from John Sims Tennison for £30.1

On July 15, 1774, Hugh sold one wagon and a team of six horses to James Menees, Jr. for £66.2

On October 3, 1774, a John Gilliland was made administrator of the estate of Eleanor ? Gilliland, deceased, of Amherst County, Virginia. Hugh and James Menees, Jr. were also bonded with John.3

Hugh appeared in the Personal Property Tax List for Amherst County in 1782, the year it started.4 He also listed in 1783 as well as in the Heads of Families for Amherst County (1783) with nine whites and five blacks in his household.4,5 He was not listed in 1785 nor was he found in the Personal Property Tax List after 1783. My guess is he was already in Tennessee by then.5,4

Hugh was in Davidson County, Tennessee by April 1787 when he was recorded in the County Court Minutes along with his attorney John McDaniel.6,7 He was also recorded on the 1787 tax lists (which was the first year in which the tax on land and polls was taken) as having two taxables.8,9

On December 29, 1800, Hugh, by way of his attorney John McDaniel of Wilson County, Tennessee, sold his 100 acres of land on Porage Creek in Amherst County, Virginia, to Thomas Wilcox for 40£.10 This deed does not specify where Hugh was living at the time of the sale but according to a number of sources it's apparent he was in Davidson County.

There seems to be a connection between Hugh and James Menees, Jr. James was a witness to the deed when Hugh originally purchased this land in 1773. And as previously mentioned, Hugh sold a wagon and team to James in 1774. Also, James was one of the men bonded in the estate of Eleanor ? Gilliland along with Hugh. According to the book History of Davidson County, Tennessee by W. W. Clayton and Find-a-Grave, James Menees, Jr. moved to Tennessee around 1783.11

In 1805, both Hugh and a John Gilliland (not sure who this is) were listed in the tax lists for Davidson County.11 Even though Hugh was found in the tax lists there were no deeds found for him in the Grantor/Grantee Indexes.

Susannah ?1

F, #18115, d. circa 15 February 1808
Last Edited=10 Dec 2019
Susannah ? married William Hill.1 Susannah ? married ? Gilliland.

Susannah was listed in the Heads of Families for Amherst County in 1785, as Susannah Gilliland, with four whites in her household but no buildings or other dwellings. She was not listed in 1783.2 I searched the Personal Property Tax List for Amherst County which starts in 1782. The first year that Susannah Gilliland was listed was in 1789.3 She was listed in the Personal Property Tax List in 1790 with no no white males or slaves - only herself.3 (Hugh Gilliland was listed in 1782 and 1783 but after that is gone from the tax lists. In 1785, 1787 and 1788 there was a William Hill but he could have been her son or grandson.)3

On November 7, 1796, Susannah purchased 67 acres of land on Porage Creek in Amherst County from Paul Wood of Amherst County and Francis Wood of Bedford County, Virginia for 47 pounds 15 shillings.4

On July 18, 1801, Susannah purchased 50 acres of land on Porage Creek from John Knight for 60£.5

On December 13, 1803, Susannah sold 75 acres of land located on the south fork of Porage Creek to James Marr for 85£. Then on the same day she purchased 100 acres of land from William and Nancy Hill (most likely her grandson and his wife) for 85£.6

On October 15, 1807, Susanna made out her Last Will & Testament. She is named as Susanna Gilland of Amherst County, Virginia although at this point we don't know which Gilliland she was married to at the time of her death. In her will she mentions only three children: Elizabeth Thurmond, Judith Lyon (who had married Alexander Lyon on October 7, 1786), and Madison Hill, as well as two grandchildren: Susanna Lyon and Susanna Hill (daughter of her son Madison.)1

Susannah ? died circa 15 February 1808 at Amherst County, Virginia.1

Elizabeth Hill was born in 1763.1 She was the daughter of William Hill and Susannah ?1 Elizabeth Hill married Felix Thurmond on 10 October 1783 at Amherst County, Virginia.1 Elizabeth Hill married Thomas Edwards on 7 August 1822 at Amherst County, Virginia.1 Elizabeth Hill died in October 1851 at Amherst County, Virginia.1

Elizabeth had a son, William Davis Hill, out of wedlock before she married her first husband Felix Thurmond. A descendant of this son was yDNA tested and it was determined that he is genetically a Gilliland. As far as the records go only two Gilliland men have been found in Amherst County, Virginia around the time of William's birth - John Gilliland and Hugh Gilliland. Also, Elizabeth's mother Susannah's second marriage was to a Gilliland. So, we don't know who her second husband was, we don't know what the relationship was between John and Hugh Gilliland, and we don't know who fathered Elizabeth's son William.
