     Mahulda Ricks was born on 28 November 1821 at Alabama.2,1 She married James Alexander Gilliland, son of John Gilliland and Sarah Elizabeth Brasier, on 14 May 1841.1,3 Mahulda Ricks and James Alexander Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of DeKalb County, Alabama, enumerated 13 December 1850. Their children Elijah Benton, Massey M., Edward Franklin and Phebe E. were listed as living with them, as was William van Buren, James' son from his first marriage.4 Mahulda Ricks and James Alexander Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Township 12 Range 3E, St. Clair County, Alabama, enumerated 28 June 1860. Their children Elijah Benton, Massey M., Edward Franklin, Phebe E., Mary Ann, Adeline, Nancy, Martha E. and Sarah were listed as living with them, as was James' younger brother John W. Malone, in 1871.1 Susan Washburn and William van Buren (Dock) Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Crawfords Cove, St. Clair County, Alabama, enumerated 11 June 1880.
