     William S. Gilliland was born on 6 May 1806 at Hampden Sydney, Prince Edward County, Virginia.1 He married Elizabeth Mayes on 2 March 1831 at Cumberland County, Virginia.2 Elizabeth died in 1832.1 William S. Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Rives (now Henry) County, Missouri, with a household listed as one male 30-39, one female 5-9, two females 20-29, and one female 40-49, with one person engaged in agriculture.3 According to his obituary the women living with him listed on the 1840 census were his mother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and his daughter Elizabeth.1 William purchased 80 acres of public land, described as the W½ of the NW¼ of Section 17, Township 43N, Range 24W, in Rives County, Missouri (which became Henry County on October 15, 1841) in early 1841. It was granted and patented to him on May 1, 1843.4 Then on August 19, 1841, before it was actually patented to him, William sold those 80 acres to Thomas Buckinghan for $200.5

William S. Gilliland married Jane Mayes on 4 November 1857 at Benton County, Missouri.6 Jane was his first wife's sister. She was a widow her first husband Jesse Garland having died in 1856. William S. Gilliland and Jane Mayes appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Tebo township, Henry County, Missouri, enumerated 28 August 1860.7 Also living with them were Martha J. Garland, age 12; and Jesse Garland, age 8; who must have been Jane's children from her first marriage.7 William S. Gilliland and Jane Mayes appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Tebo township, Henry County, Missouri, enumerated 10 July 1870.8 Jesse Garland, Jane's son from her first marriage, was also living with them.8 William S. Gilliland and Jane Mayes appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Windsor township, Henry County, Missouri, enumerated 9 June 1880.9 William S. Gilliland died intestate on 2 December 1882 at Windsor, Henry County, Missouri, at age 76.1,10,11 On December 14, 1882, William's estate was probated. In the Letters of Administration it listed his widow Jane and his daughter Elizabeth Gooden as his heirs.11

William was probably the son of William Gilliland.

     Victoria Pierrand was born in March 1840 at Belgium.1 She married George Washington Gilliland, son of Davis Gilliland and Hulda Bartlett.1 Victoria Pierrand and George Washington Gilliland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, enumerated 12 June 1900. Their children Edward and George Francis were listed as living with them.2 On 5 July 1905, Victoria Pierrand of Daviess County, Kentucky made out her Last Will & Testament.3 In it she mentioned her three children still living and her two grandchildren of her deceased daughter (name not listed). Her daughter Celia Stone was to administer the trust for her grandchildren. She died on 13 July 1905 at Daviess County, Kentucky, at age 65.4,1 She was buried at Derby Cemetery, Derby, Perry County, Indiana.1 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)
