     Josiah Gilliland was born circa 1841 at Indiana.1 He was the son of Joseph Gilliland and Lucinda Clark.1 Josiah Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Harrison township, Delaware County, Indiana, in the household of his parents, Joseph Gilliland and Lucinda Clark.1 Josiah Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Jerome, Howard County, Indiana, in the household of his parents, Joseph Gilliland and Lucinda Clark.2 On August 26, 1861 Josiah enlisted in the Civil War as a private in the Indiana Militia, Company D, 39th Regiment. He was discharged on February 19, 1864 at Lyner Station, Tennessee.3 Then on February 20, 1864 he re-enlisted at Lyner Station in Company D, Regiment 8 and was mustered out on July 20, 1865.3 Josiah Gilliland married Generva Elmore on 7 September 1865 at Howard County, Indiana.4 Josiah Gilliland married Sarah E. Spencer on 23 June 1867 at Howard County, Indiana.4 Josiah Gilliland married ? Ratclif.5

Josiah Gilliland married Mellissa Jane French, daughter of George W. French Sr. and Elizabeth Roberts, on 18 August 1872 at Boone County, Indiana.6

On May 29, 1878, Josiah and Melissa sold Lot #5 in the town of Zionsville to B. W. Harden for $700. It was the lot that Melissa's parents sold to her on February 27, 1873.7

Josiah Gilliland and Mellissa Jane French appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Los Angeles township, Los Angeles County, California, enumerated 7 June 1900. Their children Eliza Lydia, Oliza and Ninephtha were listed as living with them.9

On December 27, 1907 Josiah was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Pacific Branch, in Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California.3 He was a widower and his daughter, Lydia Osher, Sherman, CA, was listed as his nearest relative. (There was a Lida Osher, age 29, born 1881 in Indiana, in the 1910 Federal Census for Los Angeles Assembly District 70, Los Angeles, California living with her husband George.)10

Josiah Gilliland died on 30 July 1909 at Sherman, Los Angeles County, California.3

Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Union township, Highland County, Ohio, enumerated 2 November 1850, living in the Daniel Cashett household.2 He married Elizabeth Jane Hodson, daughter of Hiram Hodson, on 15 March 1856 at Highland County, Ohio.4,5 On December 17, 1856, James was appointed guardian of his wife, Elizabeth Jane, age 16 years & 8 months, minor heir and legal representative of Hiram Hodson, decd.6 James G. Gilliland and Elizabeth Jane Hodson appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Union township, Highland County, Ohio, enumerated 18 July 1860. Their son Lloyd Oscar (Auskers) was listed as living with them.7 (The census record for Russell Station post office, Union township, Highland Co, Ohio in 1860 reported the age of son Oscar to be 6 years old. That is a mistake and I believe they meant to report 6 "months". I believe this is the correct census record because James' brother John is also listed in the Russell Station area.)

James G. Gilliland and Elizabeth Jane Hodson appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Richland township, Clinton County, Ohio, enumerated 3 June 1870. Their children Lloyd Oscar (Auskers), John Franklin, Richard Hiram, Alvin Bryon and Harley Harvey were listed as living with them.8 James G. Gilliland and Elizabeth Jane Hodson appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union township, Highland County, Ohio, enumerated 16 June 1880. Their children John Franklin, Richard Hiram, Alvin Bryon, Harley Harvey, David Jefferson, Laura Louella, Nellie Brown and Marion Herbert (Bert) were listed as living with them.9 James G. Gilliland and Elizabeth Jane Hodson appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Union township, Highland County, Ohio, enumerated 1 June 1900. Their children Harley Harvey, Nellie Brown and Marion Herbert (Bert) were listed as living with them.10 According to this 1900 census, James and Elizabeth had eleven children, seven of whom were living at the time.10
