     Eula Coslett was born circa 1902 at Missouri.2,1 She married John Edward Gilliland, son of James Benjamin Gilliland and Sarah Ellen Groesbeck, on 11 November 1936 at Jackson County, Missouri.1 On the 1940 census record, enumerated on April 16, 1940, Eula was living in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, with seven children, a son-in-law, and grandchild. The six unmarried children were all listed with surname Gilliland. However, the first three, Everett, Dorothy, and Dora, where children by her first husband Walter W. Coslett (see 1930 census record). Rosalie, age 5, and Irene, age 4, could be John's daughters. Darlene, age 2, was most likely John's daughter. Eula, who was listed as the head of household, was first recorded as widowed and then that was crossed out and an M was put in for married.2

Ralph Sherwood Gilliland, 88, Venice, died June 2, 2003. He was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Kansas City, Kan., and came to Venice in 1971 from Independence, Mo. He was an office manager for 34 years with Eastman Kodak Co. in Kansas City. He was a member of Epiphany Cathedral. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; a sister, Hazel Curran of Sheboygan, Wis; stepsons, T. Patrick Moore of Venice, John Moore of Bloomington, Ill., and Mark Moore of Kankakee, Ill; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A memorial Mass will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. Farley Funeral Home and Crematory, Venice Chapel, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.4

Gary Gilliland, 71, of 729 Wildwood Drive, died at 8:15 p.m. May 24, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was born Nov. 20, 1939, in Ottumwa to Hubert G. and Helen Woodard Gilliland. He married Reva E. McGhee July 28, 1962.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1957, he served with the U.S. Army. Gary had worked for Bloom Builders, Bloom Supply, Bonanza Builders and Harvestore. He was a life member of National Rifle Association and and a member of the Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and watching all kinds of car racing.

Surviving are his wife, Reva; two daughters, Andrea (Russ) Bombei of Sigourney and Missy (Tony) Garrett of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, Kyle, Sabrina, Victoria and Leya Garrett, all of Ottumwa, Sarah and Samantha Bombei, both of Sigourney; a brother, Allan (Joan) Gilliland of Ottumwa; a sister, June Henry of Sigourney; sister-in-law, Kay Gilliland of Sigourney; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Fred Gilliland.

     Harry Frederick Gilliland was born on 31 January 1941 at Hayesville, Keokuk County, Iowa.1 He was the son of Hubert Geraldean Gilliland and Helen Woodard.1 Harry Frederick Gilliland married Kay Wymore on 9 November 1963.2 Harry Frederick Gilliland died on 4 February 2005 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa, at age 64.2,1 He was buried at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.3

SIGOURNEY - Fred Gilliland, 64, of Sigourney, died at 5:45 p.m. Feb.4, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. He was born Jan. 31, 1941 in Hayesville to Hubert and Helen Woodard Gilliland. He married Kay Wymore Nov. 9, 1963.

He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1959 and from William Penn College in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. He taught government, economics and psychology at Sigourney High School from 1971 until his retirement in May 2004. He was a member of NEA, ISEA, Keokuk County Retired Teacher's Association, a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of Powekshiek County Sportmen's Club, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and IKES. He took stats for the Sigourney/Keota football team for 32 years, and was an instructor for Hunter Education for 30 years. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts for many years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing, writing, photography, poetry, spending time outdoors, traveling, reading, being in the mountains and competing in high power rifle matches.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter Lyn (Jim) Moes of Kansas City, Mo; a son Brent (Tami) Gilliland of Sigourney; a granddaughter Emma Gilliland of Sigourney; a sister June Henry of Sigourney; two brothers AI and Gary Gilliland both of Ottumwa; several nieces and nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sigourney Junior-Senior High School with Rev. Kate Stangl officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established memorials to the Fred Gilliland Scholarship Fund or to the Sigourney Public Library.2
