Hugh Gilliland1

M, #15712, d. before May 1816
Last Edited=9 Dec 2019
Hugh Gilliland was the son of Thomas Gilliland.

Hugh Gilliland married Elizabeth Morgan, daughter of Edward Morgan and Susanna ?.1

In 1772, Hugh made a settlement on Buffalo Creek in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia).2 On February 22, 1780 he was granted a certificate for those 400 acres of land on Buffalo Creek, called Greenland. The land was eventually surveyed on April 15, 1785.2

On March 30, 1780, Hugh was assigned a tract of land (that Thomas Gilliland purchased from Zephaniah Dunn on September 10, 1770 for £450) on the waters of Buffalo Creek called Buck Run in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia), consisting of 300 acres. I believe that this Thomas Gilliland was Hugh's father.3

In 1781, Hugh appeared on the Tax List for Donegal township, Washington County, Pennsylvania showing he owned 300 acres, 2 horses, 3 cattle, and 3 sheep.4,5

Note: The boundaries between the counties of Ohio in Virginia and Washington in Pennsylvania are very confusing during the late 1700s.

On March 24, 1784, Hugh, who was living in Virginia, sold 100 acres of land in Washinigton County, Maryland to Thomas and James Prather of Washington County, Maryland for £400.6 The land was called Indian Bottom and was originally granted by patent to Thomas Gilliland dated July 25, 1752.7

On February 5, 1787, Hugh purchased 100 acres of land in Ohio County, Virginia on the waters of Short Creek from his father-in-law Edward Morgan for £75. He was living in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia) at the time.8

In 1790, Hugh was listed on the personal tax list for Ohio County, Virginia.9

On September 1, 1793, Hugh sold 300 acres of land on the waters of Buffalo Creek in Washington County, Pennsylvania to James and John Gilliland, who I think were his sons, for £100. The land was part of a tract of land granted to Hugh by a patent dated February 26, 1788, (In 1808, James and John, living in Belmont County, Ohio would sell this land.)10

On April 1, 1794, Hugh and his wife Elizabeth, along with James Ford, all of Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia), sold the last 100 acres of the tract of land called Greenland to Archibald Glover of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for £92 10s.11

On January 7, 1805, Hugh sold those 100 acres of land he purchased from his father-in-law to John Morgan.12

By June 15, 1808, Hugh and his family were in Belmont County, Ohio where he purchased 640 acres (Section 25, Township 9N, Range 6W, situated in the south-west portion of Kirkwood township) from Christopher Winter for $1280.13 On February 20, 1809, Hugh was granted the SE¼ of Section 2, Township 10N, Range 7W (160 acres in Oxford township), Guernsey County, Ohio.14 On October 1, 1811, Hugh was granted a land patent for the SW¼ of Section 19, Township 9N, Range 6W, in Kirkwood township, Belmont County, Ohio.15 On December 8, 1812, Hugh sold to Hugh Ford for $200, 100 acres of the land he originally purchased from Christopher Winter in 1808.16 On June 28, 1813, Hugh sold 16 acres of the land received as a land patent in 1811 to George Henry for $60.17

On January 13, 1814, Hugh purchased a 1/4 section of land, 160 acres, in the NW1/4 of Section 1, Township No. 10, Range 7, from Archibald Woods in Guernsey County, Ohio on the head waters of Wills Creek for $480.18 On March 24, 1814, Hugh laid out the town of Fairview in Guernsey County from the 160 acres of land he received in a patent in 1809. It contained "thirty lots, each one-fourth of an acre in area, fronting on the two sides of what is now the National road or Fair street."19 Starting on January 27, 1815 and continuing until the 18th of November, Hugh sold 20 of the lots in Fairview to a number of different people including his sons Morgan and Thomas. All but one of the lots were a 1/4 acre in size and the selling price ranged from $6.00 to $30.00.20

On 17 April 1815, Hugh Gilliland of Belmont County, Ohio made out his Last Will & Testament.1 In it he mentions his wife Elizabeth and children James, Jesse, Thomas, Hugh, Morgan, Rachel Aubury, Ruth, Hannah Giffee, and Susannah Bates.1 On June 17, 1815, Hugh and Elizabeth sold Lot #22 in the town of Fairview, Guernsey County, Ohio containing 1/4 acre of land to their son Thomas for $30.21

Hugh Gilliland died before May 1816 at Belmont County, Ohio.1

This short biography on this Gilliland family appeared in the book History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties, Ohio published in 1880:

The Gillilands - In 1804, three brothers, Morgan, Thomas and James Gilliland, single men, migrated from Virginia to Belmont county, Ohio and commenced improvements on section twenty-five, Kirkwood township, the land being entered by their father, Hugh Gilliland, a few years previous. Their first improvement was the erection of a log cabin, and in the fall of the same year their father came on with the remainder of the family, consisting of wife and six children, John, Jesse, Susan, Rachel, Hannah and Ruth. They all lived in the cabin house for some time, and then a better one was erected. Thomas, Morgan and John served in the war of 1812, under the command of Captain Bentley and returned home at the close of the war. All of them have long since passed away. The father, Hugh Gilliland, deceased in 1817.22

On June 15, 1808, James along with a John Gilliland, who could be his brother, sold 300 acres of land on the waters of Buffalo Creek in Washington County, Pennsylvania to Christopher Winter of Washington County for $1500. The land was originally purchased by James and John from their father Hugh on September 1, 1793 and was part of a tract of land that Hugh was granted by patent dated February 26, 1788.3

James Gilliland married Jane Bates, daughter of Jesse Bates, on 20 August 1808 at Belmont County, Ohio.4

James Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Oxford, Guernsey County, Ohio, with a household listed as one male 10-15, one male 26-44, one female 10-15, and one female 26-44.5 On April 25, 1827, the sheriff of Guernsey County, Adam Clark, sold to James, as the highest bidder, 80 acres of land in Oxford township (the S1/2 of the SW1/4 of Section 2) for $240. This land was originally owned by Daniel Campbell but he lost the land in a judgement.
