     James Logan Gilliland was born circa 1811 at North Carolina.1 He was the son of Jacob Gilliland and Ruth Logan. James Logan Gilliland married Prudence Banning.1

On October 16, 1846, James, his sisters Jane Moody and Rebecca Ann Gilliland (listed as heirs of Ruth Gilliland who was herself listed as an heir of Robert Logan) and John Logan (also an heir of Robert Logan) conveyed to Rebecca Logan a number of parcels of land in McDowell County.2

On February 25, 1850, James and his sister Jane Moody, conveyed to their sister Rebecca Ann Derreberry a parcel of land in McDowell County on the north side of the Catawaba River which was part of the land that was granted to Jacob Gilliland and Ephraim Logan on November 24, 1806 (#3404). Jane Moody, James Gilliland, and R. A. Derreberry are listed as heirs of Jacob Gilliland.3

James Logan Gilliland and Prudence Banning appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of McDowell County, North Carolina, enumerated 15 August 1850. Their children Jacob Henry and William Grayson were listed as living with them.1

On February 3, 1851, James, along with his sisters Jane Moody and Rebecca Ann Derreberry as well as John Logan and Rebecca Logan, sold 200 acres of land on Cane Creek waters of the Catawaba River to John Rickets for $200.4 Also on this date, James, Jane Moody, John Logan and Rebecca Logan conveyed a parcel of land on the waters of Crooked Creek to Rebecca Ann Derreberry for one dollar.5 On February 24, 1851, James, his sister Jane Moody, his sister and brother-in-law Rebecca Ann and William Derreberry, and Rebecca Logan, all of McDowell County, North Carolina, conveyed to John Logan, for one dollar, eight tracts of land on both sides of the Catawaba River.6

James Logan Gilliland and Prudence Banning appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of McDowell County, North Carolina, enumerated 18 June 1860. Their children Jacob Henry, William Grayson and Ruth were listed as living with them.7

On the death certificate of his daughter Ruth it listed his name as Logan Gilliland. This would be his middle name as he is listed in various deeds in McDowell County as James L. Gilliland.8
