Karen Lee Kent1

F, #14568, b. 22 October 1939, d. 13 November 2007
Last Edited=9 Apr 2016
Karen Lee Kent was born on 22 October 1939 at Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma.1 She married Joe Ted Gilliland, son of James Theodore "Ted" Gilliland and Erabel Roan, on 5 April 1958.1 Karen Lee Kent died on 13 November 2007 at Oklahoma at age 68.1

The following obituary appeared 14 November 2007 in The Oklahoman:

Karen Lee Kent Gilliland was born October 22, 1939, to Charles Leasure and Gladys L. Kent, in Frederick, Oklahoma. Karen lost her five and one-half year battle with ovarian cancer on November 13, 2007. Through the entire battle of five surgeries and multiple chemo treatments, Karen was a fighter, never complaining but always thanking God for every day He gave her with her family. God richly blessed her life. Her desire was to be a witness of Christ's enduring strength and goodness in her sickness. Her faith in Christ throughout her life, and mostly recently through her illness, has been a powerful example for friends and family.

Karen married Joe Ted Gilliland April 5, 1958. Survivors include her husband Joe; son, Kent Allan and his wife Julie of Oklahoma City; and son, Brad Wayne and his wife Amy of Fort Collins, CO. She has six grandchildren, Meggie Nelson and her husband Clay, Ryan, Kevin and Emily Gilliland, all of Oklahoma City, and Drew and Luke Gilliland of Fort Collins, CO. She is also survived by one brother, Wayne Kent and wife Shirley of Frederick; and two sisters, Charlsa Gant, Frederick, and Marilyn and her husband Dr. Martin Hullender of Altus.

From 1965 to 1980, while Joe was President of the Oklahoma Bankers Association, Karen was active in the planning and hosting of many dinners and meetings, as well as planning both domestic and foreign travel for many of Oklahoma's bankers and spouses.

Karen was always a part of her church children's ministries and from 1985 to 1990, she was on the ministerial staff of Putnam City Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, as its Preschool Director. At the time of her death, she was an active member of Village Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.

Karen truly loved life. She loved to get together with friends, and she loved to travel, mostly when it involved her grandchildren, either taking them on trips to see the world, or just visiting those in Colorado. More than anything, she loved to be a part of the lives of her children and grandchildren. Even until her final days, she was the grandmother, always cheering in the stands at every ball game, gym meet or cheer competition, regardless of the weather. She was a real and personal part of their life, often found on the floor playing with them when they were young or serving as the nanny. She was always a good sounding board with sage advice. She will be missed by those left behind but will always have a special place in our hearts.

A Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., at Village Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Immanuel Community Church, Karen Gilliland Memorial Fund, 1725 W. Mulberry, Fort Collins, CO. 80521.1
