Gilleland and Mary Fairbanks.1 William Gilleland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mason, Nez Perce County, Idaho in the household of his mother, Mary Fairbanks, and step-father, John Johnson.3 William Gilleland appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Pleasant, Garfield County, Washington, enumerated 20 May 1910, working in the James L. Raines household.4 On 3 September 1918, William registered for the draft for WWI. He was living in Peola, Garfield County, Washington, at the time. King.2 Chester Eugene Gilleland married Irma May Dyer on 3 July 1928 at Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho.3 Chester Eugene Gilleland and Irma May Dyer appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho, enumerated 8 April 1930.4 Chester Eugene Gilleland died on 16 May 1994 at Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington, at age 85.1

Chester Eugene Gilleland, retired owner of Gilleland Photographic Studio in

Clarkston, died of cancer Monday at Clarkston Care Center. He was 85.

The son of Fredrick C. and Minnie M. King Gilleland, he was born March 1, 1909, at Peola, Wash.

He attended Clarkston and Lewiston high schools and Lewiston Business College.

He worked as a bookkeeper at Chevrolet garages at Moscow and Clarkston from 1927 to 1929, and then started work at Vollmer-Clearwater Grain and Co. at Lewiston. In 1933 he went to work at J.C. Penney in Lewiston as a publicity and display manager.

He married Irma Dyer July 3, 1928, in Lewiston.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 in communications and the transportation corps as a technical sergeant in charge of delivering supplies to the front lines. He received the Bronze Star and the Medal of Valor for being part of the holding force in the Colmer Bulge. He remained in Munich for a year to aid in the rebuilding of many manufacturing companies.

He wrote about his experience in North Africa in Leaves from a Soldier's Notebook, a column for the Lewiston Morning Tribune.

After his military service he studied advanced photographic techniques at Dallas, Texas, and for 40 years owned and operated Gilleland Studio above the Lee Morris Company in Clarkston.

As a member of a committee to create a memorial for area veterans, he refused to accept the building of a spire or a column, but instead demanded a structure that would be of value to the community. Tri-State Memorial Hospital was the result. He was a member and officer of the hospital's founding board for 13 years, until the project was funded.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of American Association of Retired Persons and Photographic Association of America, and was president of the local photographic organization. He was a former member of various business organizations.

He was baptized in the Episcopal church.

He was an avid gardener and also enjoyed classical music and opera.

Survivors include his wife at Clarkston; a daughter, Kathleen Meshishnek of Asotin; a sister, Verna Miller of Kennewick; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Clarkston VFW for disabled veterans.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Merchant Funeral Home at Clarkston with the Rev. Leonard Forsmann of Holy Family Catholic Church at Clarkston officiating. Cremation is planned.5

     Irma May Dyer was born on 20 June 1908 at Beckwith, Plumas County, California.2 She married Chester Eugene Gilleland, son of Fredrick Charles Gilleland and Minnie M. King, on 3 July 1928 at Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho.1 Irma May Dyer and Chester Eugene Gilleland appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho, enumerated 8 April 1930.3 Irma May Dyer died on 24 April 1999 at Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington, at age 90.2 She was buried at Vineland Cemetery, Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington.2

Funeral Mass for Irma M. Gilleland, retired owner with her husband of Gilleland Photographic Studio in Clarkston, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rev. Leonard Forsmann as celebrant.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Gilleland, 90, died Saturday of causes related to age at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston.

She and her husband, Chester, opened the Gilleland student in 1947 and operated above the Lee Morris Co. in Clarkston for the next 40 years.

She was active in church affairs and worked for many years as member of the Tri-State Memorial Hospital Guild. She was one of a group of women who started a telephone counseling service for girls in the valley.

She was born June 20, 1908, to Charles H. and Leona V. Callen Dyer at Beckwith, Calif.

She attended schools at Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Republic, Wash. She also attended Lewiston Business College and Lewis-Clark Normal School at Lewiston, now Lewis-Clark State College.

She married Gilleland on July 3, 1928, in Lewiston.

In the 1930s, she worked for six years with the state of Idaho at Lewiston as a social worker. Then she worked for six years with the law firm of Ware, Stellman & O'Connell.

During World War II she worked in the office of the newly established valley airport at Clarkston, where pilots were being trained.

In the 1960s, she was publicity chairman for Holy Family Parish, submitting articles to local newspapers.

She was a member of the National Council of Catholic Women, representing Washington and Alaska, and was president of the Altar Society at Holy Family Catholic Church. She served on many local, regional and national committees for her church and was appointed by the U.S. State Department to the Washington State Women's Conference Coordinating Committee.

In 1977, Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma named her an outstanding woman of her community.

Gilleland was an avid reader and enjoyed classical music and opera.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathi Meshishnek of Asotin; two sisters, Irene Reed of Clarkston and Faye Cruzen of Kennewick, Wash; and two grandchildren.

Inurnment will be at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston.

The family suggests any memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Anne's Infant Home, Spokane, Wash.

Merchant Funeral Home of Clarkston is in charge of arrangements.2
