Blackford appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Morgan County, Alabama, enumerated 28 November 1850. Their son Adelbert Blackford was listed as living with them.1 On August 31, 1852, Silas and his wife Mary Jane sold some tracts of land in Warren County, Kentucky to Charles H. Mitchell that Mary Jane had inherited from Ephram Blackford. They were living in Morgan County, Alabama at the time of the sale.3 There's a Silas Gilland, age 32, school teacher, living in Jackson Co, AL in 1860. He's living with the Simons family and has a 10 year old son with him (S. N.)4

     Adelbert Blackford Gilliland was born on 23 November 1849 at Alabama.2,1 He was the son of Silas J. Gilliland and Mary J. Blackford.1 Adelbert Blackford Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Morgan County, Alabama, in the household of his parents, Silas J. Gilliland and Mary J. Blackford.1

According to his Civil War Service Record, Adelbert, at the age of thirteen, enrolled on October 6, 1862, at Macon City, Missouri, as a musician in Company E, 23rd Regiment, for three years, stating he was born in Limestone County, Alabama. Later in the record though, it looks as if he actually enlisted on November 25, 1862 and a Spottswood A. Thomas signed his consent form as being his lawful guardian. Here it says that Adalbert was born in Morgan County, Alabama. Morgan is the county just south of Limestone County.3

Adelbert Blackford Gilliland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Audrain County, Missouri, enumerated 14 August 1870, living in the household of his father and step-mother.4

GILLILAND - Robertson Hendon Gilliland, died February 1, 2000 at his home in Jacksonville. He was born in Nashville, TN in 1911. Robertson Hendon Gilliland, known to his friends as Rod, attended Wallace School and later Duke University. He began his career in finance and became president of Hermitage Securities Company in Nashville. He served in World War II as a pilot, flying the Himalaya Mountains ("the Hump'') from India to China. In 1947, he moved his family to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. He became owner and president of Flagler Laundry and Cleaners in Jacksonville, FL. He was on the first vestry of Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra. In the 1950's he moved his family to Ortega in Jacksonville. They became members of the Florida Yacht Club, the River Club, and Timuquana Country Club. He retired and moved to Amelia Island Plantation in the 1970's where he lived for some twenty years. He and his wife moved to Cypress Village Retirements Community in 1995. He is survived by his wife Henrietta Lewis Gilliland of Jacksonville; and his daughter, Elizabeth Gilliland of St. Augustine; and his son Edwin Gilliland of Arlington, VA. His son Robin Heywood Gilliland predeceased him. Rod Gilliland is survived as well by three grandchildren, Elizabeth Hendon Gilliland of Chicago IL, Jonathan Gilliland of San Francisco CA, and Robin Gilliland of Alexandria LA; and his daughter-in-law, Caroline Gilliland Theus of Alexandria LA. A memorial service is scheduled at Ponte Vedra Christ Episcopal Church at 1:30 PM Saturday, February 5, 2000. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that a donation may be made to a charity of your choice or Hospice of Northeast FL, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257. HARDAGEGIDDENS FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, Jacksonville Beach are in charge of local arrangements.7

Their daughter Gertrude Elizabeth "Trudy" was listed as living with them.3 Henrietta Lewis died on 24 February 2013 at Florida at age 99.2

Henrietta Lewis Gilliland, "Hinkey", died Sunday, February 24, 2013. Hinkey was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 29, 1913. After graduating from the Ward-Belmont Preparatory School, she attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. On June 6, 1935, she married Robertson Hendon Gilliland, "Rod". During their early years of marriage, while living in Nashville, Hinkey served on the Junior League. She and Rod then moved to Ponte Vedra, Florida, where she was one of the founders of Christ Episcopal Church. They then settled in Jacksonville, Florida, where Hinkey was a member of the Colonial Dames, the Florida Yacht Club, and the Timuquana Country Club, and a longtime member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. In 1973, she and Rod retired to Amelia Island, Florida. Hinkey is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Rod; her children, Elizabeth and Robertson; her two sisters, Edna Moody and Gertrude McCall; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Verner Moore Lewis. She is survived by her son, Edwin; her daughter-in-law, Caroline Gilliland Theus; grandchildren Elizabeth (Temple) Fennell, Jonathan (Jennifer) Gilliland, and Robertson (Emily) Gilliland; and her great-grandchildren, Beck and Keller Gilliland and Dosia, Clara, and Frances Fennell. Throughout her 99 years, Hinkey possessed an incisive sense of humor steeped in old-fashioned southern charm. She was also a stalwart friend and the life of the party. A memorial will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra at 10 a.m. on March 1.2

GILLILAND Gertrude Elizabeth Gilliland (Trudy), daughter of Robertson H. and Henrietta Lewis Gilliland, died in a Jacksonville hospital Wednesday, July 2, 2008 following a lengthy illness. She graduated from Bartram School in 1956, attended Duke University and graduated from Columbia University in New York She also earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Hunter College. Elizabeth lived in New York for many years before returning to Jacksonville. She was a gifted writer of poetry and prose, a photographer and painter, and avid reader. Her essays, interviews, poems and prose pieces were published widely. Her photographs and paintings were featured in many exhibits. She was an early contributor to Kalliope Magazine. Elizabeth thrived on the arts and loved to attend lectures and seminars on a broad range of subjects. She was a very spiritual person and attended Christ Episcopal Church of Ponte Vedra Beach. While growing up in Ortega she attended St. Marks Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Colonial Dames. Survivors include her mother; brother, Ed Gilliland; sister-in-law, Caroline Theus; niece, Elizabeth Gilliland Fennell; nephews, Jonathan and Robin Gilliland; great nephews, Beck and Keller Gilliland; great nieces Dosia, Clara and Frances Fennell. She was predeceased by her father and her brother, Robin Gilliland. A Celebration of Elizabeth's Life will be held at Cypress Village Saturday, July 5 at 4:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of N.E. Florida or the charity of your choice.2
