Murray on 24 May 1870.2 William Smith Gilliland died on 18 February 1919 at Karthaus, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, at age 76.3,5,2 He was buried at Keewaydin Cemetery, Keewaydin, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.5

The following obituary appeared 26 February 1919 in the The Clearfield Progress, Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania:

WILLIAM SMITH GILLILAND
Doctor Willilam Smith Gilliland, one of Karthaus’ best and most representative citizens, passed to his reward at ten o’clock Tuesday night, February 18, 1919.
Dr. Gilliland was the son of John and Lydia Gilliland. He was born December 9, 1842 near Potter’s Mills, Centre county, and was in the 77th year of his age. He was about fifteen years old when the family came to Karthaus township. He attended the local schools and received his professional training in the Jefferson Medical College.
He commenced his practice at Salt Lick. He went from there to Keewaydin, where he practiced for fifteen years, removing from there to LeContes Mills, where they remained ten years. They then moved to Karthaus, where he spent the rest of his life.
He was united in marriage with Martha A. Murray, daughter of Alexander Murray, May 24, 1870. They went to housekeeping in Keewaydin.
Dr. Gilliland was a staunch Democrat in politics, but was never an aspirant for political honors. He accepted the office of Township Auditor when elected and served acceptably. He was a citizen of whom any community might be proud and had the welfare of the community at heart.
Dr. Gilliland was in active practice for forty-five years. He was a skilled physician and had a heart big enough to take in the needs of all his patients. He traveled those hills, ministering to the sick and dying. Like the Great Physician, he went about doing good. By his life of devotion to duty, he endeared himself to the hearts of the people for miles around.
Dr. Gilliland was raised a Presbyterian and remained in the Presbyterian faith all his life. But in his death, the Karthaus Methodist church had lost one of its best friends. He was trustee for many years and occupied that position up till the time of his death. He took an active interest in everything that concerned the church. He was faithful to the Church Militant and is now enjoying the privilege of membership in the Church Triumphant.
Dr. Gilliland was a great sufferer during the last five years of his life. But he bore his sufferings like a brave soldier of the cross. He was one of the most beautiful Christian characters I ever met. His faith was wonderful and he could see the sunlight of God’s love shining through every cloud.
Dr. and Mrs. Gilliland had almost fifty years of beautiful married life and in one year they would have celebrated their golden wedding. I have never seen a more devoted couple. They lived for each other in the true sense of the word. His loving wife was never far from his side at any time.
Their home life was ideal. It was a Christian home, in the highest sense of the word. Dr. and Mrs. Gilliland lived for their children. They were interested in everything that they did and raised a family of useful men and women who will always be an honor and a testimony to good home training.
The Gilliland home was a hospitable home. You were always sure of a warm welcome there. Dr. Gilliland was a Christian gentleman in every sense of the word. He was kind and courteous in his manner and had the faculty of making everybody feel at home with him.
He had a keen intellect and was wide awake on all the questions of the day and his business judgment was of the best.
Sorrow has often visited this home. Dr. and Mrs. Gilliland lost seven children during the course of their life. But they saw in it all the hand of the Lord and knew that everything works together for good to them that love the Lord.
Dr. Gilliland is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. George Spears, Pottsdown, Pa; Harry B. Gilliland, Karthaus; Mrs. James Hiffle, Morristown, New Jersey; Mrs. Nelson McNaughton, Harrisburg; Mrs. William Ross, Jr., Karthaus; Paul W. Gilliland, Williamsport. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren. Two sisters and a brother also survive, Hannah Catherine Gilliland and Mary A. Gilliland, Karthaus, and Robert C. Gilliland, Snow Shoe.
The funeral was held from his late residence in Karthaus, Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, February 22, 1919, Rev. John P. McCurdy officiating. Appropriate addresses were delivered by Dr. E. C. Reeve, Rev. W. B. Cook, Port Matilda, and Rev. John P. McCurdy. Interment in Keewaydin cemetery.
