Jonathan Gilliland and Catharine Chambers obtained a marriage license on 13 April 1837 at Barren County, Kentucky.3,1,4 Jonathan Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 30-39, one female 20-29, and one female 40-49.5

Jonathan Gilliland and Catharine Chambers appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, enumerated 12 September 1850. Their children John S., Alexander P., Booker William and Thomas M. were listed as living with them.1 On January 5, 1857, Jonathan sold all his right, title, and interest in the landed estate on the waters of Peter Creek of his father John Gilleland, deceased, to David R. Frances for $45. No description of the land was given in the deed.6

     Francis Willis Gilliland was born circa 1839 at Tennessee.1,2 He was the son of Robert Samuel Gilliland and Caroline Center.1 Francis Willis Gilliland was probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Robert Samuel Gilliland, in the 1840 Federal Census of Roane County, Tennessee.3 Francis Willis Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee, enumerated 21 November 1850, living in the household of his aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Henry Liggett, and his sisters Louisa and Emily.4

Francis (as Frank W.) joined for duty and enrolled as a private in Capt. Benjamin F. Welcker's Company, 3rd Regiment, East Tennessee Volunteers by D. M. Key, on July 22, 1861, at Roane County, Tennessee. He was a drummer. On February 15, 1862, Frank was wounded in the action at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. He appeared on the muster rolls from January through April 1863 in Company I, 26th Regiment Tennessee Infantry, and also in January, February and May to August of 1864. On July 1, 1864 he was promoted from 1st Corporal to 4th Sergeant. There is no indication of when he was musted out.2

According to information compiled by a family historian, Francis married and had at least one child, a son William. So far I have not been able to document this but I have listed here who his son is claimed to have been.1

     John Gilland was born on 9 April 1849 at Indiana.2,3,1 He was the son of James Gilland and Clarissa Bartlett.1 John Gilland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Sims township, Grant County, Indiana, in the household of his parents, James Gilland and Clarissa Bartlett.1 John Gilland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Sims township, Grant County, Indiana, in the household of his parents, James Gilland and Clarissa Bartlett.4

John Gilland married Margaret M. Cerzick on 24 July 1878 at Delaware County, Indiana.5,6,7 John Gilland and Margaret M. Cerzick appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Putnam township, Anderson County, Kansas, enumerated 3 June 1880. Their daughter Nettie R. was listed as living with them.6 Around 1882 John and Margaret separated.7 In July of 1884 John filed for divorce.7

John Gilland married Mary Alice Oliphant on 10 January 1885 at Delaware County, Indiana.5 John Gilland and Mary Alice Oliphant appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Monroe township, Randolph County, Indiana, enumerated 4 June 1900. Their children Grover, Franklin, Clara, Edward, Maud, Fredrick, Myrtle and Lena were listed as living with them.8 (Note: the enumeration date for this census is incorrect as their daughter, Myrtle, died on April 30, 1900, according to her death certificate, and she was still listed in the census record on June 4th.) John Gilland and Mary Alice Oliphant appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Center township, Delaware County, Indiana, enumerated 28 April 1910. Their children Grover, Franklin, Clara, Edward, Fredrick and Lena were listed as living with them.9 Also living with them was Archa V. Gilland, granddaughter, who appears to be the daughter of Clara (unknown father) according to the 1920 census.9
