Bessie Ida Fenton was born on 24 January 1914 at Westmont, Camden County, New Jersey.2 She married Ernest Lytle Gilliland, son of Joseph Hooker Gilliland and Edna Blanche Moffitt, on 11 November 1939 at Haddonfield Presbyterian Church, Haddonfield, Camden County, New Jersey.1 Bessie Ida Fenton died on 13 October 2007 at West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida, at age 93.2 She was buried at Bound Brook Cemetery, Bound Brook, Somerset County, New Jersey.2 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

The following obituary appeared 16 October 2007 in the Asbury Park Press, Neptune, Monmouth County, New Jersey:

PALM BEACH SHORES, Fla. -- Bessie Fenton Gilliland, 93, of Palm Beach Shores, Fla., formerly of Bound Brook, passed away Oct. 13, 2007 in Cape May as a result of kidney failure.

Born Jan. 24, 1914 in Westmont, she was the daughter of Warren Lozier Fenton and Ethel Emma (Lotzgesell) Fenton. She was the wife of the late Ernest L. Gilliland, a longtime superintendent of schools for Somerset County and other New Jersey school systems including Highland Park, Washington, and Cape May. As a spouse, Bessie provided enthusiastic support to the teachers and administrators in each of those school districts and was an active contributor to the communities in which she lived. For many years she was a member of the Women's Auxiliary and the Board of Directors of Somerset Medical Center.

She was especially well-known and a longtime fixture in Cape May, a place she deeply loved, both during her husband's tenure there and later as the grande dame of the Inn of Cape May (formerly the Colonial Hotel) where each summer she served tea and coffee on the porch, gave tours, and answered questions about the history of the era, its beaches, hotels, and Victorian "painted ladies" homes. She was a multi-year champion of the International Clamshell Pitching Tournament, an annual Cape May beach event, and is still the only person to have won the women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles in a single year.

In later years she spent winters near her sister in Palm Beach Shores, Fla., where she was a member of the congregation of the Royal Poinciana Chapel. She enjoyed the Lawn Bowling Association and was secretary-treasurer of the Bravado Lane Condominium Association. Her interests included the ocean, train travel, crossword puzzles, the New York Times, and the New York Yankees.

A much-loved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Bessie is survived by a son, Steven Fenton Gilliland and his wife, Joan (Campbell) Gilliland of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Tracey and Scott; her sister, Virginia Fenton Beddow of Hobe Sound, Fla; four nieces, two nephews, three grandnieces and six grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Warren; and by her husband. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Ave., Bound Brook, and in Tequesta, Fla., at a later date; services were held Oct. 15 at Cape Island Baptist Church in Cape May.
