John Gilliland

     John Gilliland was born between 1761 and 1770 at North Carolina.1,2 He married Elizabeth (Betsey) Wilson on 29 August 1799 at Barren County, Kentucky.3,4 John appeared in the tax books for Barren County, Kentucky starting in 1799. He was first listed only as a white male above the age of 21 with horses. It wasn't until 1805 that he was shown as owing any land. That land was located on Peters Creek.5 There was also a Jonathan Gilliland listed in the tax books starting in 1799. He appeared on the lists through 1811 never showing that he owned any land. Was he possibly a brother to John? In 1807, a John Gilliland Jr. started to appear in the tax records. He was listed as a white male above the age of 21 with no land. He apparently was John's son from a previous marriage however I can't find him in any census records and he doesn't appear to be living with John in 1810.5

John Gilliland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 10-15, one male over 45, two females under 10, and one female 26-44.6 He appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, with a household listed as four males under 10, one male 16-18, two males 16-25, one male over 45, one female under 10, one female 10-15, one female 16-25, and one female 26-44 with three persons engaged in agriculture.7

John Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, with a household listed as one male 5-9, three males 15-19, one male 20-29, one male 50-59, one female under 5, one female 10-14, one female 20-29, and one female 40-49.8 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, with a household listed as one male 15-19, two males 20-29, one male 70-79, one female 10-14, one female 20-29, and one female 50-59.1

John Gilliland died between 1840 and September 1850 at Barren County, Kentucky.9

     James Gilliland was born between 1756 and 1774.1 He married Mary ? There were four North Carolina land grants issued to a James Gilleland in Guilford County between the dates of 1787 and 1800. The first, grant #1419, entered on October 30, 1785 and issued on May 16, 1787 was for 450 acres on the second Rich Fork (Book 65, page 132. This is also recorded in deed Book E, page 548.)2,3 The second was for 100 acres on the Rich Fork (Creek) of Abbotts Creek, grant #1443, entered on July 26, 1785 and issued on May 16, 1787 (Book 65, page 139. Also recorded in deed Book F, page 511.)2,4 The third land grant, #1995, was for 250 acres on the waters of Abbotts Creek also and was issued on December 18, 1799 (Book 105, page 260. Also recorded in deed Book G, page 345.)2,5 And the fourth land grant in Guilford County was for 41 acres on the waters of Abbotts Creek as well, entered on July 1, 1799 and issued on December 24, 1800 (Book 112, page 289. Also recorded in deed Book G, page 280.)2,6

James Gilliland appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Guilford County, North Carolina, with a household listed as four males under 10, one male 26-44, two females under 10, and one female 26-44.1

In 1800, James started selling his land in Guilford County, North Carolina. On August 27, 1800, he sold 140 acres on the waters of Rich Fork (Creek) of Abbotts Creek to Joseph Hitchcock for $280.7 Then the next day on August 28th he sold an additional 30 acres on the waters of Abbott Creek to Joseph Hitchcock for $50.8 On August 15, 1801, James purchased 14½ acres of land on the waters of Rich Fork (Creek) of Abbotts Creek from Richard Day for £10.9 On January 18, 1802, James sold his 450 acres on the waters of Rich Fork (Creek) of Abbotts Creek, obtained through grant #1419, to Micajah Chamniss for 43 pounds 15 shillings.10 On November 15, 1802, he sold his 100 acres, on the waters of Rich Fork (Creek), obtained with grant #1443, to Thomas Elliott for £100.11 On August 31, 1804, James sold some land (134 acres) on the waters of Reedy Fork in Guilford County to Joseph Hitchcock for £90.12 And finally on October 25, 1804, he sold 406 acres on the waters of Rich Fork (Creek) of Abbotts Creek to Victor Victory for £500.13

Besides the land grants issued to James in North Carolina, he received a grant for 200 acres of land on Shoal Creek (waters of Skaggs Creek) in Barren County, Kentucky on August 31, 1799.14 James and his family moved to Barren County some time between October 1804, when he sold his last piece of land in Guilford County, North Carolina, and July 4, 1805, when he was recorded for the first time in the tax records for Barren County.15

James Gilliland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, with a household listed as four males under 10, two males 16-25, one male over 45, one female under 10, two females 10-15, and one female over 45.16 James' will was written in November 1816 and probated at the January court 1817. In it he mentions his wife Mary and their six youngest children Rachel, Thomas, Wilson, Samuel, Joseph and Margaret Gilliland. The executor was his son John Gilliland. The witnesses were Harrelson Glover (married on January 12, 1812 to Polly Gilliland who was probably another of James' daughters), John Gilliland, and John Denham.17 He died before January 1817 at Barren County, Kentucky.18,17,19

On January 8, 1825 the children of James - Thomas, Samuel, Rachel, Joseph, and Margaret, sold to their brother, James Jr., 32 acres and 144 poles of land on Shoal Creek waters of Skaggs Creek for $112.00. This land was part of the original 200 acres that James Sr. received in 1799.19

Joseph C. Gilliland married Elizabeth Watson on 2 September 1824 at Barren County, Kentucky.5 On December 2, 1833, Joseph purchased 40 acres of land from Cornelius Cooper (its description being the W end of the NE¼ of Section 4, Township 14N, Range 1W) in Hendricks County, Indiana for $150.6 On May 6, 1836, Joseph and Elizabeth sold 40 acres of land, being the SW¼ of the NE¼ of Section 4, Township 14N, Range 1W, to Cornelius Cooper for $200.7 On June 8, 1836, Joseph purchased 80 acres of land, also in Hendricks County, from Mary Chaplain for $270. Its description being the W½ of the SW¼ of Section 34, Township 15N, Range 1W.8 On June 11, 1836, Joseph and Elizabeth sold the N½ of the NE¼ of Section 4, Township 14N, Range 1W containing 59 acres to Simeon R. Paine for $425.9 On April 7, 1837, Joseph and Elizabeth sold to Elizabeth Wills 80 acres of land (the W½ of the SW¼ of Section 34, Township 15N, Range 1W) for $400.10

In a suit of Equity at October Term 1856 in Barren County, Kentucky wherein David Gilleland & others were plaintiff and Jonathan Gilleland and others were defendants, it was ordered that a tract of land of 96 acres, patented to William Newel on which John Gilleland lived and died, lying on waters of Dry Fork of Peters Creek in Barren County be sold by commissioner H. P. Curd. On February 16, 1857, commissioner Curd sold this land to William. On August 21, 1857, all the rights, titles, claims and interests of David, Robison, Elizabeth, Margaret (Peggy) Ann, John, James, Thomas, Jacob, and Lydia Gilleland and other unknown heirs of John Gilleland deceased and also of James D. Smith who purchased the interest of Jonathan Gilleland, were conveyed to William. This deed was recorded on October 10, 1857.3

William Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of District No. 1, Barren County, Kentucky, enumerated 21 August 1860.4 Also living with him were Elizabeth and Margaret who I believe were his sisters although their ages are not correct.4

     Elizabeth Gilliland was born circa 1818 at Kentucky.1 She was the daughter of John Gilliland and Elizabeth (Betsey) Wilson.1 Elizabeth Gilliland was probably the female under age 10 listed in the household of her father, John Gilliland, in the 1820 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky.2 Elizabeth Gilliland was probably the female age 20 to 29 listed in the household of her father, John Gilliland, in the 1840 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky.3 Elizabeth Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Barren County, Kentucky, in the household of her mother Elizabeth (Betsey) Wilson.1
