Marklesburg, Pa.

Merchant: A son of Luther and Anna (Scott) Gilliland, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Scott, of Charter Oak, Huntingdon County, Pa. The father died in 1917, aged sixty-two years. The mother died in 1924, aged sixty-six years. They lived at Neff's Mills. Thomas B. Gilliland was born at Altoona, Pa., February 5, 1888, and at Manor Hill he began his first schooling; later on attended the schools of McAlevy's Fort, for one term; also took a course in dairying at State College, Centre County, Pa. Accepted position at ice cream plant at Tyrone, Pa; was there for four years, and then to Bedford, Pa., at milk plant, and at Harrisburg, Pa., for two months. He then accepted a position at the State Capitol Building, Harrisburg, Pa., Department of Forestry and Water. Both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Church. Was inspector on election board for two terms, and clerk for one term.      Eliza J. Johns was born circa 1805 at Pennsylvania.1 She married John Gilliland, son of John Gilliland and Hannah Michaels.1 Eliza J. Johns and John Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shirley township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 29 October 1850. Their children Ellen, Wesley, David and William were listed as living with them.1 Eliza J. Johns and John Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Springfield township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 October 1860.3 Also living with them was 9 year old Margaret Gilliland (a daughter, granddaughter??)3

On November 13, 1861, Eliza was granted letters of administration for her husband's estate.4 On November 20th, Eliza submitted an inventory of the goods and chattels of John's estate to the court. This entry in the Orphans' Court dockets stated that John was late of Henderson township.5

On January 24, 1863, Eliza purchased lot #20 in the village of Mapleton, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania from James Donaldson for $50.6

On May 5, 1866, Eliza (living in Mapleton, Union township) made out her Last Will & Testament. She mentioned her son William and the fact she had six children at the time. A. W. Swoope and John Gayton were made her executors and daughter Ellie was one of the witnesses.7
