The earliest mention of a Richard Gilliland I could find in Hawaii was in an advertisement in the newspaper Polynesian dated February 14, 1852, where it stated that he and Joseph S. Kidder intended to leave the kingdom.2 On July 10, 1852, an advertisement was placed in the Polynesian that he had acquired the painting establishment of M. R. Harvey.3 Then around October 16, 1853, Richard and M. R. Harvey became partners as painters, glaziers, and paper hangers.4 On January 21, 1854, Richard was naturalized as a Hawaiian citizen (volume L, page 78.)5 Richard Gilliland married Rosalie Coffin Jones, daughter of John Coffin Jones and Lahilahi Marín, on 21 January 1854 at Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Territory.1,6 By February 10, 1855, Richard was foreman of Mechanic Fire Company No. 2 in Honolulu.7 Around June 9, 1860, he had purchased the painting business of Mr. J. McClymont.8
