The following obituary appeared 26 February 1945 in the Litchfield News Herald:

Charles Franklin Gilliland, 75, retired grocery merchant of Hillsboro, died at his home in that city, Saturday night at 7:30 o’clock. Mr. Gilliland had been in ill health for several weeks and several days ago was stricken by paralysis.

A son of Aaron W. and Nancy Crites Gilliland, he was born June 17, 1869, in Coles county, Illinois. He came to Litchfield to reside for three years before locating in Hillsboro in 1905. He was united in marriage with Lucia Gillstrom of Champaign county Feb. 20, 1896.

Besides the widow, he is survived by eight children: Albert Gilliland, Wyandotte, Mich; Leo Gilliland, Mrs. George Dugger, Elmer Gilliland, Mrs. Minnie Piazzo, all of Hillsboro, T. Sgt. Paul Roger Gilliland, Laguna Beach, Calif; Mrs. Edmond Vandever, Jr., Nokomis, and Miss Edith at home.

Two sons, Charles and Clarence and a brother and two sisters have preceded him in death. Fifteen grandchildren also survive. A grandson, William Albert Gilliland of Wyandotte, Mich., was killed in action in Belgium with paratroopers unit during January.

Mr. Gilliland served as city commissioner at Hillsboro for 12 years. He was past noble grand of the Hillsboro lodge of I. O. O. F. and held membership in the Modern Woodman camp of Hillsboro. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Bass funeral home in Hillsboro. Rev. T. O. Melton of the Hillsboro Presbyterian church will officiate. The Hillsboro Odd Fellows lodge will be in charge of graveside services in Oak Grove cemetery.
