David Gilliland Sr.

M, #1255, d. 1831
Last Edited=22 Sep 2018
The earliest record found for David was the 1781 Tax List for Chester County, Pennsylvania where he was found living in New Garden township as an "inmate". An inmate was a married renter heading a household.1 He was also listed in the 1785 Tax List (same township, same county), under the name David Gilland.2

David was found in the Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File maintained by the Pennsylvania State Archives. He was a private in the 3rd Battalion, Capt. Wm. Whitesides Company, from Chester County. He was recorded as being fined £2.12.6 in 1781.3

David Gilliland Sr. appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of New Garden township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 1790, with a household listed as two free white males 16 years & older and two free white females.4

On December 4, 1793, David, of Tyrone township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, purchased a tract of land (lot #10), located in Huntingdon County on the head waters of Standing Stone and Shavers Creek, consisting of a little over 383 acres, from John Penn, the elder, and John Penn, the younger, by Anthony Butler of Philadelphia, their attorney, for £191.13s.3d.5

There was a David Gilliland Sr. that appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of West township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, with a household listed as one male 45 & over, one female under 10, and one female 45 & over.6 Listed right below David was a David Jr. and a Matthew who were his sons. I have no way of knowing for sure yet if David Sr. from Huntingdon County was the same David from Chester County. The following information is about the Huntingdon County David.

Huntindgon County was created from Bedford County in 1787. There was a Philip Gilliland from Bedford County that may be an ancestor to David. In the book History of Huntingdon and Blair Counties, Pennsylvania, in the section on Barree township, it states that "David Gilliland, of Irish birth, was one of the first settlers below the Manor, rearing a large family, one of the daughters, Mary, yet being a resident of the township, at the age of about eighty years." and that one of the daughters of Abraham Hagen married a David Gilliland. Don't know if this was David Sr. or Jr.7

In the 1810 Federal Census for Barree township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania there is only one D. Gilliland with a household listed as three males under 10, three males 10-15, one male 26-44, one male 45 & over, three females under 10, and one female 26-44.8 It appears that David is living with David Jr.

By 1812 Barree township had been created out of West township and David was found as a taxable with 215 acres of land.9

David Gilliland Sr. died in 1831 at Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.10 He died intestate and his estate went into probate around August 1831. In his probate papers it says that David died leaving no widow but four children, three sons and one daughter: David Gilliland, his eldest son, who died about 1826 leaving 8 children; James, his second son who died leaving 5 children; Jane, deceased, who married John Watt; and Matthew, the youngest son.10 His son Matthew was first made administrator of his estate and then discharged by the Orphan's Court, November Term 1837, and John Crum was made administrator.11

On December 12, 1837, John Crum, the administrator for David's estate, conveyed to John Watt, David's son-in-law, a deed for the land that John Watt had purchased from David on June 26, 1797 for £100 but had never received a deed for. It was ¼ of the tract of land that David had purchased in 1793 from the Penns.11

Robert Gilliland1

M, #1258, b. circa 1779

I'm not sure who this Robert Gilliland was. The first census record that survived for Cocke County was in 1830. On it we find this Robert and his son William. They were listed on the same page as Esther, Caleb, and Rachel O'Dell.

In 1833, there was a tract of land that was granted by the state of Tennessee to a John Gilliland in Cocke County that was originally entered by a Robert Gilliland. This land was on the waters of Cosby Creek, the same as where the lands were that were granted to Robert and a William back in 1810. This John Gilliland was in the 1840 and 1850 censuses for Cocke County and was most likely the one married to Elcie O'Dell. A male descendant of John and Elcie's was yDNA tested and found to be in Group 1.

Also, there was another family of Gillilands in Cocke County, Tennessee in the late 1700s and very early 1800s. Those Gillilands were descendants of John Gilliland and his wife Elizabeth Young. While I can not be 100% certain that the 1830 Federal census record for Cocke County refers to this Robert's family and not the John Gilliland family (he also had a son named Robert but he was dead by July 1804 ), there is quite a bit of evidence to support the connection to this Robert. First are the ages of the men in the 1830 census. Most of John's sons were either dead or had moved out of Tennessee by 1830. Second, John did not have a son named William. Robert, on the other hand, as shown in later census records, did. And his age, as well as Robert's, is consistent with the ages found in the 1830 census record for Cocke County. Also, living in the same area in Cocke County in 1830 are families that married into Robert's family and moved with him as he went, first to Marion County, Tennessee, and later to Missouri. Those families are the Lewis and Lane families. For additional information see Lewis Family Line.
Robert Gilliland was born circa 1779 at South Carolina.1

On June 28, 1810, Robert was granted a tract of land in Cocke County of 131 acres on Cosby Creek by the state of Tennessee in the District south of the French Broad and Holston Rivers.2 On the same day (and the day before), a William Gilliland was also granted two tracts of land on Cosby Creek. The first for 30 acres and the second for 61 acres.2 This can't be Robert's son William so I'm guessing it's a brother to Robert.

There was a Robert Gilliland who was an acting Justice of the Peace for Cocke County in 1826.3

In 1827, Robert was listed in the tax lists for Cocke County.4

Robert Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Cocke County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male 10-14, one male 40-49, one male 50-59, and one female 15-19.5 Also listed in the 1830 census for Cocke County, though on another page, were a James Gilliland and a William "Gilland". The William Gilliland was between 50 and 59 years old making his birth between 1771 and 1780. I believe this to be the William who was granted land on Cosby Creek at the same time as Robert in 1810.6

On February 12, 1831, Robert was granted another 50 acres of land on Cosby Creek which bordered his other land.2

Robert Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Marion County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male 5-9, one male 10-14, one male 15-19, one male 20-29, one male 60-69, one female under 5, one female 5-9, one female 20-29, and one female 60-69.7

On January 25, 1843, Robert entered 200 acres of land in Marion County on the SE side of the Sequatchie River.8

On May 1, 1844, Robert was mentioned in a deed where he and a Lucinda Cain sold to George W. Cain all the right, title, interest, and claim that they had in a tract of land called Tharkley consisting of 130 acres in Marion County where James M. Cain Sr. and Jr. lived.9

Robert Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District No. 76, Reynolds County, Missouri, enumerated 24 September 1850, living in the household of his son-in-law John Lane and his daughter Hepseba.1

For more information on his daughters' families see Lewis Family Line.
