Samuel Gilliland married Martha Comstock on 18 July 1839 at Pioneer township, Cedar County, Iowa.1 Samuel Gilliland and Martha Comstock appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Pioneer township, Cedar County, Iowa, enumerated 20 September 1850. Their children Francis Marion, Nathan and Julia A. were listed as living with them.2 Samuel Gilliland and Martha Comstock appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Pioneer township, Cedar County, Iowa, enumerated 4 August 1860.      Nathan C. Gillilan was born on 5 October 1827 at Mason County, Virginia (now West Virginia).1 He was the son of William Gillilan and Ann Edmiston.1 Nathan C. Gillilan appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Linn County, Iowa, in the household of his father William Gillilan.2 Nathan C. Gillilan married Mary L. Heaton on 13 July 1851 at Linn County, Iowa.3,4 Nathan C. Gillilan and Mary L. Heaton appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Maine township, Linn County, Iowa, enumerated 17 July 1860. Their children Charles H., Lydia and Augustus H. were listed as living with them.5 Nathan C. Gillilan and Mary L. Heaton appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Maine township, Linn County, Iowa, enumerated 9 June 1870. Their children Charles H., Lydia, Augustus H., Orpha Jane, Marcus Manley, William C., Sherman and Sheridan were listed as living with them, as was a four year old unidentified daughter.6 Nathan C. Gillilan appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Wahoo, Saunders County, Nebraska, in the household of his daughter, Orpha Jane Gillilan, and son-in-law, Edward Ellsworth Good.11 Nathan C. Gillilan died on 18 May 1927 at age 99.12 He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Central City, Linn County, Iowa.12
