The following obituary appeared May 1934 in the Cadiz Record, Cadiz, Trigg County, Kentucky:

Benjamin Franklin Gilliland

Claude Gilliland, who lives near Cadiz, was informed last week of the death of his uncle, B. F. Gilliland, who was a resident of Hopkins county.

The Madisonville Hustler of Monday 21 had the following to say: Benjamin Franklin Gilliland, 82, a St. Charles resident 60 years died at his home at 7 o'clock this morning from the effects of a stroke caused five hours earlier by a clot on the brain. He was born three miles south of St. Charles on Mar 15, 1852, the son of A.B. and Sara Lindley Gilland (Gilliland). The family is of Irish origin and traces its first American ancestor to North Carolina in Colonial days.

Thomas Gilliland came to this country soon after his marriage to Martha Armstrong, a North Carolinian. Both are buried in Hopkins county.

B. F. Gilliland was president of the former Buck Run Coal Co., and also bookkeeper before the West Ky Coal Co., purchased the holdings of the company.

Mrs. Gilliland died years ago and the survivors are one son, Max Gilliland of St. Charles, and a half-brother, Joseph Gilliland of the Carbondale section.
