Dale A. Gilliland, 79, of Bellevue, died Thursday, June 28, 2012. He was the lifelong, loyal friend of Elizabeth "Betty" (Douglas) Gilliland; loving father of Virginia G. "Ginny" (Philip) Petraglia, of Hampton Township, Ruthie G. (Mark) Riethmuller, of Hampton Township, and Suzanne L. Gilliland, of Bellevue; brother of Donald A. Gilliland, of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla; grandfather of Daniel Gilliland Reithmuller and Douglas Scott Reithmuller; uncle of Sharon Gilliland Buttermore and Heather Shaver; also survived by his beloved dogs, Lizzie and Flossie. Dale Alexander Gilliland was born Feb. 12, 1933, in Bellevue, to Alexander Vance and Mary Louise Gardner Gilliland. Dale attended the Bellevue School District (now Northgate), where he graduated in the class of 1951. Dale's musical life started at age five, when he began piano studies and advanced his studies to the organ at age 12. On Feb. 6, 1949, as a young 15 year old, he “slipped onto the organ bench” to play his first service at Knoxville Baptist Church, which was just a start to a career of more than 60 years! He spent time in the service for his country in the Army at Fort Belvoir, Va., as a chaplain's assistant from 1953 to 1956. He was an organist/choir director at the Emsworth United Presbyterian Church, the Bellevue Baptist Church, Bellevue United Presbyterian Church, Watson Presbyterian Church, Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church and Crafton United Presbyterian Church. In 1995, Dale returned to Riverview United Presbyterian Church and continued to serve as the organist on Observatory Hill. Dale served as the treasurer of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He was the past president and treasurer of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians (PAM). Dale sat on the Organ Committee when the Luley organ was being built at Riverview, the Pittsburgh Opera Production Committee and the Musician's Club of Pittsburgh. He worked at Pennock's, Cutain Call, was a freelance florist and volunteered at the Food Bank at Riverview Church. There will be no visitation. Interment held within the privacy of the family. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements by LAWRENCE T. MILLER FUNERAL HOME INC., Bellevue. Christiana Mehard McGrath, formerly of Lackawannock Township, died at 8:05 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in Countryside Personal Care Home, East Lackawannock Township. She went to be with her Lord and Savior after an extended illness. She was 85.

Mrs. McGrath was born March 16, 1922, in Volant, Lawrence County, to Clarence H. and Grace Wilson Gilliland.

She married Francis Dale McGrath on Sept. 20, 1941.

Mrs. McGrath attended Har Brack Union High School in Natrona Heights, and graduated in the Class of 1940 from Hickory High School, Hermitage. She attended Slippery Rock University.

Mrs. McGrath was a homemaker and helped manage the former McGrath’s Grocery in Charleston, Jefferson Township, that she owned with her husband.

She was a member of Charleston United Methodist Church in Jefferson Township, where she previously taught Sunday school and junior church. She formerly attended Unity Presbyterian Church in Lackawannock Township.

Mrs. McGrath was a member and former secretary-treasurer of Sharon Steel Retirees Club and was active in various Golden Age meetings throughout the county.

She enjoyed writing letters, collecting poetry, reading, traveling, gardening and canning.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by: three daughters, Frances Grace Cann and her husband Roger, Macungie, Pa; Alice Campbell and her husband Paul, Dayton, Ohio; and Marcia Cater and her husband John, Ellwood City; a brother, Robert Gilliland and his wife Charlotte, Boardman, Ohio; five grandchildren, Cheri Bacon and her husband Brett; Roger Dale Cann and his wife Kim; Jeff Campbell; Nancy Shadlow and her husband Barte; and Christian Cater; and five great-grandchildren, Erika and Tyler Cann; and William, Blake and Cydney Bacon.

Mrs. McGrath was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Caroline Gilliland Wimer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Charleston United Methodist Church, 1169 Greenfield Road, or Sharon Regional Health System Hospice, 2320 Highland Road, both Hermitage 16148.

Richard E. Gilliland

Richard E. Gilliland, 82, of Wayne, Ohio, died Sept. 21, 2006, at his residence.

Born Nov. 4, 1923, in Malinta, Ohio, a son of Levi and Leah (Parritt) Gilliland, he married Martha J. Hedge on June 24, 1944, in Wayne, Ohio; she survives. Mr. Gilliland was a tool and die machinist/supervisor at Daybrook-Ottawa in Bowling Green for 33 years and then at Marathon Special Products in Bowling Green for 13 years. He was also a self-employed farmer. His memberships included Wayne United Methodist Church in Wayne, Ohio, and Pemberville Masonic Lodge 516 for 40 years, where he was Past Master and 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a member of Scottish Rite Zenobia Shrine Temple of Toledo for 30 years, where he was in the Jeepsters Group, a member of Albert Bowe American Legion Post 338 in Bradner, Ohio, and a 1942 graduate of Liberty Center High School. He enjoyed gardening, wood craft, and general fix-up. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving from 1943 to 1946.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by sons, Franklin D. Gilliland of Wayne, Ohio, and Jerry A. Gilliland of Hudson, Ohio; daughter, Patricia J. Miller of Wayne, Ohio; brother, Paul V. Gilliland of Napoleon, Ohio; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents; son, Donald L. Gilliland; brothers, Franklin P. Gilliland and James H. Gilliland; sisters, Opal Steward and Marian Cordes.

Funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at Wayne United Methodist Church in Wayne, Ohio, Rev. Betty Wineland officiating. Burial at Graham Cemetery in Wayne, Ohio. Visitation 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, Ohio. NOTE: The casket will be taken to church one hour prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to Wayne United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, Ohio.1
