Sharon Steel retiree served in United Methodist church

William H. Gilliland Sr., 334 Grant St., Sharon, passed away unexpectedly at 1:25 a.m. Monday (12-16-02) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 84.

Mr. Gilliland was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Sharon, a son of Clarence Gilliland and Hazel Stinedurf Gilliland.

He was a lifelong resident of Sharon and attended Sharon schools.

Bill retired in 1971 from the cold roll department of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he had worked for more than 38 years.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Sharon, where he was a past member of the church board. He also belonged to the Sharon Steel Retirees group.

Earlier in his life, he was an avid hunter. Most recently, he enjoyed daily walks to McDonald's in downtown Sharon, where he had breakfast with his friends.

His wife, the former Hazel Cline, whom he married Aug. 8, 1938, died March 14, 1981.

Surviving are: two children and their spouses, Jacqueline Mattocks and her husband Larry, Orangeville, Ohio; and William H. "Bo" Gilliland Jr. and his wife Marlene, Hermitage; two grandchildren, Richard W. Fraley, whom he reared, and his wife Ann, Masury; and Michael E. Fraley and his wife Jennifer, Sharon; six great-grandchildren, Brandon, Ricky, Courtney, Jacob, Bethany and Isaac Fraley; and his companion, Barbara Weber, Hermitage.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Clarence and John Gilliland.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 237 W. Silver St., Sharon 16146.
