Alvie LeRoy 'Herbie' Gilliland

Alvie LeRoy “Herbie” Gilliland, 78, of 343 Greenfield Road, New Wilmington, died at 4:06 p.m. Feb. 11, 2006, in Jameson Hospital.

Born April 2, 1927, in Lackawannock Township, Mercer County, he was a son of the late George W. and Agnes Reynolds Gilliland.

He married the former Dorothy M. Jones on March 16, 1952. She survives.

Mr. Gilliland retired in 1989 after 41 years with Willard Burial Service of West Middlesex. He was also a self-employed farmer.

He attended Wilmington High School.

Mr. Gilliland served with the Army during the Korean War with the 7th Infantry 4th Division.

He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Mr. Gilliland was Presbyterian.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Richard J. Hall of Hubbard, Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, George G. and Darla Gilliland of New Wilmington, and Keith A. and Nancy Gilliland of Hermitage; a foster son and his wife, Todd A. and Kelly Whitaker of Rapid City, S.D; a sister, Norma Cousins of Altoona, Pa; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother; a sister; and a grandson.

Visitation is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. David Lingle, interim pastor of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Carpenter Cemetery, Springfield Township, Mercer County.3

Gilleland, Henry, farmer, Section 36; Post Office Wilton; born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, January 10, 1812; lived there forty-five years on the farm that his father settled; came to Iowa and to Cedar County, June 6, 1857, and has lived here over twenty years; owns a farm of eighty acres and has held school and road offices. Married Margaret Ann Hill, from Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in November, 1841; they have five children --- John, Adam, Francis, Nancy J. and Henry; lost two in infancy.5 Henry Gilleland and Margaret Ann Hill appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Center township, Cedar County, Iowa, enumerated 14 June 1880.
