Last Edited=11 Apr 2015
Julia Lado was born on 5 January 1921 at Red Jacket, Mingo County, West Virginia.1 She married John W. Gilliland, son of Henry Abner Gilliland and Etta Mae Patton, on 30 October 1948.1 Julia Lado died on 15 August 2011 at Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, at age 90.1 She was buried at Brookfield Township Cemetery, Brookfield, Trumbull County, Ohio.1

The following obituary appeared 17 August 2011 in the Herald, Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania:

MERCER COUNTY — Julia Lado Gilliland White Venable of Clifford Drive, Hermitage, formerly of Wheatland Road, West Middlesex, passed away at 11:10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 90.

Julia “Judy” was always described as a graceful lady. Adorned in a scarf and dressed stylishly, she enjoyed traveling with her daughters, “hitting” the slots and playing cards with her girlfriends. She inspired us with her continuous athletic abilities, recently winning several gold and silver medals in bowling and golf from Mercer County Senior Olympics. She led an active and independent life right up to her recent brief illness. Julia was an extraordinary teacher of life's lessons, facing challenges with strength and courage; being kind, gentle and charitable; and seeing the humor in everyday life.

Mrs. Venable was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Red Jacket, W.Va., to Frank and Julia Popp Lado.

As a 1939 graduate of Hickory High School, she was her class salutatorian and later attended the former Shenango Valley Commercial Institute, Sharon.

She was employed in the offices of the former Carnegie Illinois Plant in Farrell and later of the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant.

She owned and operated the Glass Tower Tavern in Masury from 1967-83.

She was a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell; and was a past president of District 28 VFW Auxiliary.

A member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, she belonged to its Altar and Rosary Society and was a Eucharistic minister. Active in the community, she volunteered at Red Cross blood drives; the Prince of Peace Center, Farrell; and Sharon Regional Health System.

Her first husband, John W. Gilliland, whom she married Oct. 30, 1948, died March 3, 1970. She then married Charles L. White on April 28, 1980; he died Feb. 3, 1981. Her third husband, John L. Venable, whom she married April 29, 1995, passed away Dec. 29, 2003.

Surviving are: four daughters, Judith E. Puskar, Masury; Jacquelyn “Johnnie” and her husband Mark Forte, Warren, Ohio; and Peggy Hampton; and Thelma and her husband Joe Giampapa, all Columbus, Ohio; a son, Hank and his wife Rita Gilliland, Hartford, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a stepgrandchild and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her three husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael G. Gilliland; a sister, Elizabeth Lado Reidman; and 11 brothers, Mike, Alex, Steve, Nick, Pete, Frank and George Lado, and four who died in infancy.

Calling hours: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday (8-18-11) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 3126 Main St., West Middlesex, with sharing of memories at 7 p.m.

Service: Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Friday (8-19-11) in Church of the Good Shepherd, Sharon Road, West Middlesex, with Monsignor Robert M. Malene, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: Brookfield Township Cemetery.1
