Robert Gilliland1

M, #1163, b. circa 1774, d. before July 1796
Last Edited=21 Nov 2017
Robert Gilliland was born circa 1774. (His birth year is based solely on the fact that he was in the militia in 1794 and that he purchased land in 1795. He could be older but probably not much younger.) He married Mary (Polly) Brashears, daughter of Robert Samuel Brashears and Phoebe Nicks.1 On August 8, 1794, Robert of Hawkins County, Tennessee, purchased 640 acres of land in Knox County, located on the north side of the Clinch River, from William Reed and Abraham Swagerty for 400£ Virginia money. This land would later fall into Roane County when that county was formed in 1801.2 On the same day, Robert Samuel Brashears, also from Hawkins County and the father-in-law of Robert, purchased 640 acres on the north side of Clinch River, most likely next to Robert's land, from William Reed and Abraham Swagerty for 400£.3 Robert appeared with a rank of private on a pay roll of a company of mounted infantry commanded by Capt. John Beaird, of the Knox Regiment Militia of the territory south of the Ohio for the period of October 20, 1794 to November 3, 1794. He was paid 75¢ per day for a total of $11.25. On November 29, 1795, Mordecai Mendenhall of Jefferson County, Territory south of the Ohio River, sold 300 acres of land on Town Creek in Knox County to Robert Gillian. One of the witnesses was a John Gilliland. (Town Creek is near present day Lenoir City.)4,5

Robert Gilliland died before July 1796.1

The family of Robert's wife, Mary Brashear, has been extensively researched. (See the following webpages: My Son Adam's Family and Descendants of Robert Brashear)

In 1790 her father, Robert Samuel Brashear, was found living in the 96th District (Pendleton) of South Carolina with a family of one male over 16 years, one male under 16 years, three females, and one slave. The only Robert Gilliland found in the 1790 census was in Greenville District with a family of two males over 16 years, three males under 16 years, and four females. We know from land records that there were two Robert Gillilands, a Senior and a Junior. (See South Carolina Research) It's not known yet if Robert who married Mary Brashear was the son of Robert Sr. or a son of another Gilliland male living in the area. We know from the estate file of David Gilliland, who was living in Greenville District in 1790, that he did not have a son named Robert. And the only other male Gilliland, besides Robert, living in either the 96th or Greenville District in 1790 that had more than one male over the age of 16 (which included heads of household) was Jacob Gillilen from the Generostee Creek area.

According to the Brashear family history and the book Roots of Roane County, Tennessee 1792 -, Robert & Mary "Polly" Gilliland eventually moved to what would become Roane County, Tennessee, where Robert died before July 1796. We know this because on that date the Knox County Court appointed his widow as administratrix of his estate with a John Gilliland and Elias Roberts (her brother-in-law) on her bond.6

On the 1802 Roane County Tax List is Daniel Mason (the man Mary Brashear married after Robert died), listed under Capt. John Walker's Company and James Gilliland, listed under Capt. Thomas Coulter's Company 1802.7
