Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Margaret Jane Gilliland of Lackawannock township, Mercer Co., were conducted this afternoon at he home of Mrs. Frank Miller of Lackawannock township, daughter. Dr. S. A. Kirkbridge of New Wilmington, was in charge.

Mrs. Gilliland died in Buhl hospital at Sharon on Friday. She was born January 17, 1871, her parents being Thomas and Susan Reed Garrett. She is survived by her husband John Gilliland and the following children: Clifford Gilliland of Pulaski, Mrs. Frank Miller of New Wilmington, Clarence Gilliland of Sharon, Mrs. Glenn Chadderton of Sharon and George and Floyd Gilliland of New Wilmington. Her mother, Mrs. Thomas Garrett of Pulaski, also survived with the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Emma Collins, Mrs. Walter Thompson and Mrs. Clyde Metz of West Middlesex, Mrs. David Looseman of Pulaksi, Jacob Garrett of Pulaski and Richard Garrett of Buffalo, N. Y.

Interment was made in Neshannock cemetery.7

     John Gilliland was born circa 1 February 1802.1,2 (In each of the census records John was found on from 1850 to 1880 his place of birth was listed differently. In 1850 it was Ohio, in 1860 Kentucky, in 1870 Pennsylvania, and in 1880 Indiana. On his daughter Harriet Gilliland Harding's death certificate, she listed his birthplace as Kentucky.) He appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Perry County, Indiana, with a household listed as one male 16-25 with one person engaged in agriculture.3 He and Phoebe Barnes obtained a marriage license on 13 February 1821 at Perry County, Indiana.4 John Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Perry County, Indiana, with a household listed as two males under 5, one male 5-9, one male 30-39, one female 5-9, one female 10-14, one female 15-19, and one female 40-49.5 He and Phoebe Barnes appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Tobin, Perry County, Indiana, enumerated 19 September 1850. Their children Edward, Thomas and Robert Louis were listed as living with them.1 John Gilliland and Phoebe Barnes appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Tobin, Perry County, Indiana, enumerated 20 June 1860.
