Their children Gloe, Homer Marcus, Hosmer Dee and William Travis were listed as living with them.1 Mary Vista Wiginton and Columbus Garfield Gilliland appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Itawamba County, Mississippi, enumerated 29 April 1930. Their children Gloe, Homer Marcus, Hosmer Dee, William Travis, Ruby Sybil and Lola Jeanne were listed as living with them.2 Mary Vista Wiginton and Columbus Garfield Gilliland appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Itawamba County, Mississippi, enumerated 4 April 1940. Mrs. Mary Vista Gilliland, 81, died March 18, 1973 at the Itawamba County Hospital. A resident of the Tremont area, she was a leading member of the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. Mrs. Gilliland was the daughter of the late Marcus D. and Nancy Jane Wiginton and the widow of the late Garfield Gilliland. During the long illness of her husband she made her home with him at the Itawamba Hospital for several months. Funeral services were held at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Survivors included one son, Homer Gilliland of Plano, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Robert Cunningham of Starkville, Mrs. Ralph Carter, Jr. of Fulton, Mrs. Curtis Lindsey of Overland, Park, Kan; four sisters, Mrs. Fleta Stevens of Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Leta Weight of Detroit, Ala., Mrs. Ruby Kennedy of Tremont and Mrs. Pearl Spencer of Fulton; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.4

Funeral services for Hosmer D. Gilliland, of Rock Hill, S.C., were held at the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church on March 9, 1947 with burial in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Mr. Gilliland, an agronomist, died at the Doster Hospital in Columbus, Miss., after an extended illness on March 8, 1947. He had been a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church since childhood, having been born and reared in the community, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Gilliland. He resided several years at Greenwood, Miss.

He leaves his parents, and wife, Ellen White Gilliland, of Rock Hill, S.C., and two children, Dee, age 4, and Bill, age 1. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Homer Gilliland of Cherokee, N.C., Mrs. Robert Cunningham of Starkville, Mrs. Ralph Carter of Columbus and Miss Gean Gilliland of Tremont.

James M. Gilliland, New Wilmington R.D. 2, was dead on arrival at Jameson Memorial Hospital, New Castle, at 9:30 pm Monday after suffering a heart attack in his home. He was 85.

He was born Aug. 17, 1882, in Sandy Lake, the son of James and Missouri Brannon Gilliland.

A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. Gilliland was a retired farmer. He was a member of Pulaski Methodist Church.

Surviving are his widow, the former Barbara Klink Mackey; two daughters, Mrs. James (Chloie) Mitcheltree, Sharon, and Mrs. William (Rebecca) Ahern, Aurora, Ill; one son, Carl Gilliland, West Middlesex; two stepsons, George Mackey of Pennsville, N.J., and Howard Mackey of Warren, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Ray (Ruth) Jackson of West Middlesex; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Mrs. Clair Rodawalt, died in 1937.

Carl L. Gilliland of West Middlesex, passed away at 4:55 p.m. Monday in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township. He was 94.

Mr. Gilliland was born July 30, 1918, in Pulaski, Lawrence County, to James Madison Gilliland and Clara Mitcheltree Gilliland.

He retired as a welder from the former Sharpsville Steel Fabricators and served as a shop foreman.

As a member of West Middlesex Presbyterian Church, Mr. Gilliland served as an elder.

His wife, the former Edna Mae Mitchell, whom he married Aug. 30, 1941, died June 24, 1989.

Surviving are three daughters, Faith and her husband Paul Miller, Greenville; Elaine Madasz; and Brenda and her husband Dennis Neiswonger, all West Middlesex; a sister, Rebecca Ahern, San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Karleen Mae Gilliland; and two sisters, Laura Rodawalt and Chloie Mitcheltree.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.1

She attended schools in Pulaski and West Middlesex and was a homemaker.

A member of Sharpsville Church of the Nazarene, Mrs. Mitcheltree belonged to its Missionary Society and taught Sunday school.
She enjoyed genealogy studies, antiquing, seamstress work, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

Her husband, James B. Mitcheltree, whom she married March 10, 1926, passed away June 7, 1989.

Surviving are: two daughters, Myrna and her husband Samuel Shaner, Hermitage; and Sandra Glass, Ashville, N.C; a daughter-in-law, Mary Mitcheltree, Hermitage; a son, David G. Mitcheltree and his wife Lois, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; a half sister, Rebecca Ahearn, San Antonio, Texas; and a brother, Carl Gilliland, Hermitage.

She also leaves 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Mitcheltree was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James B. Mitcheltree Jr; and a sister, Laura Rodawalt.
