     Samuel Gilliland was born between 1801 and 1810.1 He was the son of David Gilliland.2 Samuel Gilliland married Eliza Brauff.2 Samuel Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Lower St. Clair township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, with a household listed as two males under 5, one male 5-9, one male 30-39, one female under 5, one female 5-9, one female 10-14, and one female 20-29.1 He died before September 1856.3

On September 6, 1856, his widow Eliza petitioned the court to appoint guardians for her four youngest children.3

According to a biographical sketch about his son, Jacob, Samuel came to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania from Ohio when he was 20 years old.2
