Harrison earned his A.B. in 1860 from Ohio University and his Doctorate of Divinity from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1872. He was President of Galesville University (later Gale College) in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin from 1865-1877 and also a lawyer.10 He was the subject of a biographical sketch in the Ohio University Alumni Bulletin of April 1910.11

     Mary Welch was born circa 1825 at Pennsylvania.2 She married Jacob Gilliland, son of Samuel Gilliland and Sarah Krouskop, on 31 August 1856 at Scioto County, Ohio.1 Mary Welch and Jacob Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Harrison township, Scioto County, Ohio, enumerated 3 August 1860. Their children Jackson H. and Nathan B. were listed as living with them, as were Mary's four children, Elizabeth, Louisa, William, and George Welch, from her first marriage.2 Mary Welch and Jacob Gilliland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Harrison township, Scioto County, Ohio, enumerated 7 September 1870. Their children Jackson H. and Nathan B. were listed as living with them.3 Also living with them were Louisa, William, and George Welch, Mary's children from her first marriage.3 Mary Welch appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Harrison township, Scioto County, Pennsylvania, in the household of her son Nathan B.
