Phillips was born on 20 November 1859 at Etowah County, Alabama.1 She married Edward Franklin Gilliland, son of James Alexander Gilliland and Mahulda Ricks, on 6 January 1878 at Etowah County, Alabama.2,1 Rutha F. Phillips and Edward Franklin Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of St. Clair County, Alabama, enumerated 15 June 1880. Their son Joseph Pierce was listed as living with them, as were Sarah, James Wiley, William, and Martha, Edward's children from his 1st marriage to Mary Moody.3 Rutha F.
