Perry Gilleland

M, #9850, b. circa 1868
Last Edited=3 Sep 2014
Perry Gilleland was born circa 1868 at Madison County, Iowa. He married Harriett Ellen "Hattie" Carter on 22 July 1894 at Madison County, Iowa.1 In 1895, Perry and Hattie, along with Hattie's three daughters from her first marriage to Josiah D. Close, were living in Patterson, Madison County, Iowa.2 On February 10, 1896, Perry was accused by Hattie of raping one of his step-daughters.3 Over the course of a month there were several articles in the Winterset Madisonian that dealt with the case.4 On March 15, 1896, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.5 There was a P. Gilleland, born May 1870, Iowa, listed in the 1900 Federal Census in Valley township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, working as a servant in the Ed White household. It may or may not be Perry.6 In 1903, Perry and his mother moved to Oklahoma.7

It appears that Perry Gilleland may have married a woman by the name of Josephine ?8 Perry Gilleland and Josephine ? appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Elida, Roosevelt County, New Mexico, enumerated 22 April 1910.8 At this time I don't have enough evidence to know if this is the correct Perry Gilleland.
I believe that Perry (as well as Louis Gilleland and Maud Gilleland) was probably the child of Cathryne Gilleland. In 1880, Perry, age 12, and Lewis (Louis), age 3, were both living with Cathryne in the household of her father James H. Gilleland. The boys were listed as step-sons of James. In the 1885 State Census for Madison County, Iowa, they were still living with Cathryne in James' household. By that time Maud was born and was 3 years old. In the 1900 Federal Census, Cathryne was on her own and Louis and Maud were living with her listed as her children.
