Robert S. Gilleland was born circa 1838 at Pennsylvania.2 He was the son of John Gilleland and Selina Thompson.1 Robert S. Gilleland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Middlesex township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, in the household of his mother Selina Thompson.2 He was a soldier of the Union army in the Civil War. He was one of the first to enlist in Company D, Eleventh Regiment Pennsylvania Reserves, becoming a member of that body of troops in 1861. He was wounded in the seven days' fight before Richmond, a ball entering his right leg, and was afterward taken prisoner, only to be subsequently released. He returned to his home with the bullet still in his leg, his surgeon having failed to remove it, where he remained until General Lee's northern invasion, when he and his brother, Wilson, enlisted in the emergency troops raised on that occasion for state defence, after which both became members of Company D, Eleventh Regiment, to which Robert had previously belonged. In the fighting before Petersburg, Robert was once more wounded in the right leg, being taken prisoner again and subsequently discharged. The leg that had twice received bullets had also previously sustained an accident in his youth through the falling of a heavy tree limb, which had caused a white swelling that never subsided.3 Robert S. Gilleland died on 30 August 1865 at Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.4 He was buried at Middlesex Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania.5 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)
