Flemming Gilliland was born circa 1815 at South Carolina. He married Lucinda ?1 Flemming Gilliland and Lucinda ? appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Caesars Head, Greenville County, South Carolina, enumerated 10 September 1860. Their children David Hamilton, Thomas Joseph, Elberry M., Marion, Nancy E., Susan M., Joshua E. and William R. were listed as living with them.1 Flemming Gilliland died before 9 August 1870.2

Note: There was a Smith "Gilliand", age 30, in the 1850 census for Greenville County, South Carolina with wife Sarah, age 24, and children David, age 4, and Mary, age 2. His occupation was listed as a Pres. [Presbyterian] Clergyman. Other people have recorded this as Flemming Gilliland with wife Sarah Dean, the parents of David Hamilton Gilliland. The age certainly is correct for David. Was this Flemming? Was his first wife Sarah and second wife Lucinda or were Sarah and Lucinda the same person? Checking land records for Greenville County did not reveal any for either a Flemming or a Smith Gilliland.

Her children Susan M. and William R. were listed as living with her.4 There was also another son listed as living with her. It looks like the name is Francis, age 27, but it's hard to read. Since Lucinda and Flemming had no son named Francis I'm guessing that it's one of her other sons going by his middle name - possibly Marion??4 Lucinda ? appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia, enumerated 13 June 1900.
