Services for Columbus Garfield Gilliland, a retired farmer of Tremont, were held at Tremont Methodist Church on June 20, 1965 with burial in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home was in charge. Mr. Gilliland, 83, died June 17, 1965 in Okolona after an illness of five years. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, and was born in Marion County, Alabama.

Survivors included his wife; a son, H. M. Gilliland of Parker, Arizona; three daughters, Mrs. R. C. Cunningham of Starkville, Mrs. Curtis Lindsey of Jackson and Mrs. Ralph Carter of Fulton; a sister, Mrs. Ellen Townley of Tremont; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

     Mary Francis McKenzie was born on 15 June 1871 at Alabama.2 She was the daughter of Hiram Sharp McKenzie. Mary Francis McKenzie married George W. Gilliland, son of George W. Gilliland and Mary Leticia Burris, on 26 December 1888 at Marion County, Alabama.1 Mary Francis McKenzie died on 13 November 1960 at Itawamba County, Mississippi, at age 89.2

Former Resident of Fulton Dies at 89

Fulton: Mrs. George W. Gilliland, formerly of Fulton, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday in the Aberdeen at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O R Weaver, where she resided. She was 89.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Aberdeen at the home of Mrs. Weaver, 400 Chestnut Street, with the Rev Norris Garner and Price Edwards officiating. The body will be carried to Providence Church Cemetery four miles north of Tremont in Itawamba County, where graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. by the Rev Leroy Grissom and Rev Carl Parker. Hawkins Funeral Home of Fulton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gilliland leaves another daughter, Mrs. Effie Brown of Fulton; four sons, J. H. and C. D. Gilliland of Fulton, H. M. and J. Hobson Gilliland of Tupelo; two brothers, Benny McKenzie of Detroit, AL and Worley McKenzie of Mingram Oklahoma; four sisters, Mrs. Neoma Hambright of Winters, Texas, Mrs. Lizzie Wright of Sulligent, AL, Mrs. Kelsie Stanford of Hamilton, AL and Mrs. Leona Stanford of Paris, AL; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and three great - great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. She was buried at Providence Cemetery, Tremont, Itawamba County, Mississippi.2

     John Gilliland was born circa 1814 at Hancock County, Georgia.2,1 (Even though he was listed as being 30 on the 1850 census his Civil War Service Record has his age as 47 when he enlisted in 1861.) He married Lucretia Burge on 22 September 1830 at Fayette County, Georgia.3 John Gilliland and Lucretia Burge appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Randolph County, Alabama, enumerated 16 December 1850. Their children Charles, Mary, Henry, James and Elizabeth were listed as living with them.1 (They were living a few household away from Thomas Gilliland who was the son of William and Susan Grantham Gilliland.) John Gilliland and Lucretia Burge appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Bivens, Jefferson County, Alabama, enumerated 7 June 1860.4 John enlisted in Company C, 20th Regiment Alabama Volunteers on September 9, 1861.2 John Gilliland died of pneumonia on 23 March 1862 at Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.2
