Obituary for Mr. Everett Bailey Gilliland

Funeral service for Mr. Everett Bailey Gilliland, 88, of Kellyton, will be Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Kellyton First United Methodist Church. Rev. Mike Jackson and Rev. Joe Mallory will officiate. Mr. Gilliland will lie in state for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Kellyton Memory Gardens with veteran honors provided by the Alexander City Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home.

Mr. Gilliland passed away on Monday, March 7, 2011 at Brookwood Medical Center. He was born on September 19, 1922 in Kellyton, Alabama to Edward Everett Gilliland and Sallie Ruth Bailey Gilliland. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II and enjoyed talking about his time in the Army. He graduated in 1949 with an accounting degree from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, known now as Auburn University. He was a lifelong and active member of the Kellyton First United Methodist Church and had served as the church treasurer for 50 years. He was a very loving and kind Christian man. He dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending time on his land, riding his tractor, hunting and fishing. He was also very active in his community. He was a charter member and treasurer of the Kellyton Community Club and a member and treasurer of the Kellyton Water Board and the Rotary Club. Mr. Gilliland also worked for Madix for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Salter Gilliland of Kellyton; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Davis of Kellyton and Martha Evelyn Harrelson (Tommy) of Dadeville; sons, Ralph Edward Gilliland of Sylacauga and John Phillip Gilliland (Janet) of Alexander City; grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Davis, Gregory "Greg" David Harrelson (Kristin), Margaret Elizabeth "Beth" Hudson (Jake), Benjamin "Ben" Everett Harrelson (Natalie), Sarah Melissa Gilliland, Caitlin LaRue Gilliland and Matthew "Matt" Bailey Gilliland; great-grandchildren, Braxton Harrelson, Riley Harrelson, Davis Hudson, Grant Hudson and Jonas Baskin; and sister, Mary Annie Sharp (Grafton) of Lynn Haven, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Evelyn Wheelis and Freda Wylie.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be given to the Kellyton First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 279, Kellyton, AL 35089.
