William Gilliland Sr. was born on 25 November 1761 at Parish of St. Paul (now Columbia County), Georgia.1 He was the son of Thomas Gilliland and Ann ?2 According to William's Revolutionary War Pension file (which is 91 pages and is provided as five pdf files), in November 1776, while residing in St. Paul's Parish, he enrolled in the militia of Wilkes County, Georgia. He served four months in each of the years 1777, 1778, and 1779, and two months in 1780. After the war, he moved with his father to Wilkes County.1 William appeared on the 1785 Tax Digest for Wilkes County in Captain Walker's District with taxable property of 1 poll and 287½ acres.3

William Gilliland Sr. married Susan Grantham on 10 March 1792 at Warren County, Georgia, (date provided by Susan Gilliland and the testimony of two witnesses, in Revolutionary War pension files.)1

On April 10, 1798, William purchased 250 acres of land in Hancock County, Georgia, on the waters of Buffalo, from William Ashmore for $225.4 On March 2, 1799, William sold 200 acres of land in Hancock County (when surveyed, Washington County), lying on the waters of Ouknee (being part of a survey orginally granted to William Gilliland) to William Wilson for $500.5

On January 23, 1800, William purchased 139 acres of land in Hancock County (when surveyed, in Washington County) from Benjamin Tennille for $100.6 On October 6, 1800, William sold 95 acres of land on the waters of Sandy Run in Hancock County to Robert Rivers for $200.7

On August 13, 1803, William sold 125 acres of land on the waters of Buffalo in Hancock County to James Majors for $125. The land was bounded by Grantham's land and by William's other land and was part of a tract of land originally granted to William on April 22, 1803.8

On December 8, 1804, William sold 4½ acres of land on the waters of Sandy Run to John Brown for $7.00.9 On October 10, 1808, William purchased 125 acres of land on the waters of Buffalo bounded by Gilliland and Grantham's lands from James Majors for $100.10

On October 31, 1811, Nancy Gilliland of Randolph County, Georgia, appointed William her lawful attorney to transact all manner of business concerning a certain tract of land adjoining James Page's land in Hancock County, Georgia.11 On December 17, 1814, William, acting as "attorney in fact" for Nancy Gilliland, sold those 160 acres of land adjoining James Page's land, situated on Turkey Creek in Hancock County, being part of a tract of and originally granted to Van Lofton(?), to Green B. Pinkston for $350.12

On March 5, 1817, William sold 150 acres of land which was originally granted to him in Hancock County to Samuel McCook for $100.13 On October 12, 1822, William sold 466 acres of land on Sandy Run Creek, waters of Buffalo, where "he now lives and has owned and occupied for many years" to Philip L. Simons for $1165. On December 9th, he bought 134 acres of land on Sandy Run Creek from Joseph R. Sasnett for $312 which he then sold on December 12th to Philip L. Simons for $335. (These are the first deeds to mention William's wife Susan.)14

On December 24, 1822, William sold 58 acres of land on the waters of Sandy Run to Major Peace for $200. (Major Peace married Bridget Gilliland on March 8, 1814, who may be a daughter of William's brother Hugh.)15 On December 27, 1822, William purchased lot #215 (202½ acres) in the 13th District, Henry County, from Blakely Eddens for $200.16 On December 7, 1824, William, now residing in Fayette County, sold 287½ acres of land on the waters of Sandy Run to Tully Choice for $300.17

William appeared on the 1826 Georgia Property Tax Digest for Fayette County, Henry C. Morgan District. He was listed as an agent for Lucas Gilliland of Fayette County, and Hugh Gilliland of Early County, Georgia. Also on the page was William Gilliland, Jr. of Early County.18

On February 2, 1828, William granted his daughter, Rhoda, a "negro woman named Grigg", the deed being signed in the presence of Hugh Gilliland and William Gilliland, Jr.19

However, I have been unable to locate William on a 1820 census. According to land records he should have been in Hancock County. Are the census records for Hancock County incomplete? Where was he?)

On October 28, 1830, William Sr., of Fayette County, Georgia, purchased 202½ acres, lot #216 in the 13th District (originally Henry now Fayette County) from John Williams of Henry County for $200.21 On October 13, 1832, William sold part of lot #216 (80 acres - where William Gilliland, Jr. resided) in the 13th District (formerly Henry County, now Fayette County) to Christopher Whitman for $215.22 On January 4, 1834, William sold the north part of lot #215 (50 acres) in the 13th District to Christopher Whitman for $150.23 On October 13, 1834, William sold 150 acres, part of lot #215 in the 13th District (formerly Henry County, now Fayette County) to J. and L. P. Allen for $300.24

William Gilliland Sr. died on 25 November 1840 at Fayette County, Georgia, at age 79.1
