     Hugh Gilliland was born circa 1794 at Georgia.1 He was the son of William Gilliland Sr. and Susan Grantham. Hugh Gilliland married Lucinda Saunders on 6 August 1818 at Hancock County, Georgia.2 On August 8, 1818, Hugh purchased 94 acres of land on Buffalo Creek in Hancock County from Joseph R. Sasnett for $400. The deed was signed in the presence of William and Lucus Gilliland.3 Hugh Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia, with a household listed as one male 26-44, one female under 10, and one female 26-44.4 On December 31, 1821, Hugh, of Hancock County, sold 100 acres of land on the waters of Buffalo to Willis Heston for $300.5 On October 12, 1823, Hugh, now living in Fayette County, sold 112 acres of land on Buffalo Creek in Hancock County to Joseph R.
