William Gilliland

M, #7435, d. circa March 1781
Last Edited=9 Nov 2017
William Gilliland married Eleanor ? On March 15, 1771, William was granted a tract of land of 200 acres, that was originally surveyed for David Amery on September 16, 1760, situated in what was then Berkeley County, Province of South Carolina, in the fork of the Broad and Saluda Rivers on a branch of Little River called Sandy Run.1 On April 17, 1771, William registered a "memorial" to the auditor general about this parcel of land. (Beginning in 1741, all persons who had received land in South Carolina after 1719 had to deliver "memorials" to the auditor general, stating the county, parish, location, quantity, names of adjacent land owners, boundaries, and how the present title was received.)2 Then on March 17, 1772, William, constable of St. Mark's Parish in the Province of South Carolina, sold this tract of 200 acres on Sandy Run Creek in Newberry County (at the time called Berkeley County) to John Waldrop/Waldross for £50 sterling.3

On November 19, 1772, William was granted 40 acres of land, originally surveyed for James Johnston on May 18, 1770, situated in what was then Craven County, Province of South Carolina, on the waters of Little River.4 (For an explanation on the three early counties of South Carolina and how they changed see A History of Craven County - One of the Three Original Counties of Carolina.) On May 5, 1773, William registered another memorial, summarizing a chain of title to a land grant given to Jeremiah Lewis on November 27, 1770, for 250 acres on Bush Creek, of which 100 acres were conveyed to William on December 21, 1771.5 On December 27, 1773, William and Eleanor of Craven County, Province of South Carolina, in consideration of the sum of £50, sold to Sarah Johnson the 40 acres that William had received in the land grant dated November 19, 1772.6

On August 3, 1774, William of the Ninety-Six District, South Carolina, sold a tract of land containing 100 acres, being part of a tract of land of 250 acres granted to Jeremiah Lewis, situated in the fork between the Broad & Saluda Rivers, a small branch called Bush Creek, to Jacob Chandler for 10 shillings.7,8

On October 24, 1778, William and Eleanor sold to Robert Plonket for the sum of £900, a tract of land containing 200 acres, situated on the north side of the Saluda River on a small branch of Beaver Dam Creek, that was originally granted to Henry Morgan by a grant dated September 9, 1774 and then conveyed to William Gilliland by Henry and Deborah Morgan by indenture dated December 19, 1777.9

According to a declaration, recorded in deed Book D, page 133 for Newberry County, South Carolina, William Gilliland died circa March 1781 at Ninety-Six District, South Carolina.10 Only one piece of paper dealing with the administration of his probate has been found. It was dated April 29, 1785.11
