     John Gilliland was born on 24 June 1784 at New York City, New York County, New York.1 He was the son of John Gilliland and Catharine Aramina/Aramena.1 John Gilliland was baptized on 26 September 1784 at First (or Second) Presbyterian Church, New York City, New York County, New York.1 He married Rachel ?2

On January 1, 1821, Cornelius Hinchman, shoemaker, and Anne, his wife, sold to John, shoemaker, for the price of $1317.94 (part of which was in the form of a mortgage), two lots of ground (Lots #131 & #132) in the 8th Ward, City of New York, bounded on the north by Carmine Street, on the east by Lot #133, on the south by Lots #189 and #190, and on the west by land owned by Trinity Church; and two lots (#133 & #134) also in the 8th Ward bounded on the north by Bedford Street, on the south by land owned by Dr. Joseph Brown, on the east by Lot #135, and on the west by Lot #132.3

On April 23, 1823, Trinity Church of the City of New York sold a parcel of land in the 8th Ward of the City of New York contiguous to Varick and Carmine Streets to John for $147.4

John Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of New York City (9th Ward), New York County, New York, with a household listed as one male 10-14, two males 15-19, one male 20-29, one male 40-49, one female 5-9, two females 10-14, two females 15-19, one female 20-29, two females 40-49, and one female 50-59.5 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of New York City (9th Ward), New York County, New York, with a household listed as two males 20-29, one male 50-59, one female 15-19, one female 20-29, one female 50-59, and one female 70-79.6

By 1840, John was a grocer. He and Rachel agreed to sell a small piece of their property on Varick Street (now in the 9th Ward) to Eli Hoppock for $10 on March 13th at which point Eli agreed to build a party wall (four inches on each of their property). Then, on that same day, Eli sold to John a triangular piece of land on the east side of Varick Street for $550.7

On February 11, 1848, John leased the store attached to the house on the corner of Varick and Carmine Streets to Edward H. Senior for one year with the option of an additional four year lease.8

On January 7, 1850, Jacob Straut (who owned the mortgage) issued a quit claim deed to John and Rachel for the land and house on the corner of Varick and Carmine Streets (78 Carmine Street).9 Then on January 10th John and Rachel sold that property to John Mace for $10,000.10

John Gilliland and Rachel ? appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of New York City, New York County, New York, enumerated 24 July 1850. Their daughter Sophia was listed as living with them.2 John and Rachel appeared on the 2 July 1855 state census of New York, in New York County.11 Their daughter Sophia, son-in-law Henry Bremner, and grandson Walter were also living with them.11 John Gilliland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Acquackanonk township, Passaic County, New Jersey, enumerated 13 July 1870, living in the household of his daughter Sophia Bremner.12

Gilleland and Julia Ann Gilleland.1 Arthur Leroy Gilleland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Walnut township, Cowley County, Kansas in the household of his parents, Charles Truett E. Gilleland and Julia Ann Gilleland.1 Arthur Leroy Gilleland married Rena Ward on 1 February 1898 at Newkirk, Kay County, Oklahoma.3 Arthur Leroy Gilleland and Rena Ward appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, enumerated 5 June 1900. Their daughter Nila was listed as living with them.4 Arthur Leroy Gilleland and Rena Ward appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, enumerated 25 April 1910. Their children Nila, Helen, George W. and Leland were listed as living with them.5 On 12 September 1918, Arthur Leroy registered for the draft for WWI. Their children Nila, Helen, George W. and Leland were listed as living with them.7 Arthur Leroy Gilleland died on 18 February 1947 at Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, at age 70.2 He was buried at Evergreen Memorial Park, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona.8 His nearest relative was listed as Mrs. J.
