John H. Gilliland was born circa 1847 at Missouri.1 He was the son of Robert Gilliland and Eliza Kane.1 John H. In September or October 1874, Andrew Jackson Reed and his wife Mary moved into John's home, who was a bachelor, occupying the one-room house with him through the winter of 1874-75. On February 27, 1876, a daughter, Leila Ada, was born to Mary Reed. According to testimony in a lawsuit brought against John's children in 1920 by Leila, she was his daughter and not the daughter of Andrew Jackson Reed. "The defendants read in evidence the deposition of Jack Reed, in which he testified that plaintiff was born after he and his wife moved to Gilliland's home; that from the last of April, 1875, to the last week in June of said year, he was in Nevada, Mo., 150 miles from John H. Gilliland's home; that he did not live with his wife during said period. Reed further testified, without objection, that after plaintiff was born, while they were at the Gilliland home, she cried one morning, and he (Reed) 'sorta spanked it': that John H. Gilliland told him not to do it; that he said to Gilliland, 'What is it your business whether I whip it or not?' and Gilliland told him that plaintiff was not his child; that plaintiff's mother was present and heard this talk; that during the same day he had another talk with Gilliland and his wife; that Gilliland told him the plaintiff was his (Gilliland's) child: that he asked his wife if that was true, and she said it was; the he afterwards left her and obtained a divorce from her in April, 1879; that he never claimed plaintiff as his child; that John H. Gilliland claimed she was his child." (The complete case can be read in the attached file.)4

John H. Gilliland and Mary Hooper Reed appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Marion township, Ozark County, Missouri, enumerated 11 June 1880.5 Living with them were Leila and Leora Reed. Leila was John's daughter, born while Mary and her husband Jack Reed were living with him. Leora was the daughter of Mary and Jack Reed. John would raise both of them as his children.6

John married Mary Hooper on 9 November 1886 at Ozark County, Missouri.4 Mary died in 1890.4 John H. Gilliland married Saphrona Day on 11 March 1894 at Douglas County, Missouri.7 John H. Gilliland and Saphrona Day appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Marion township, Ozark County, Missouri, enumerated 15 June 1900. Their children Arena "Ranie" and Powerley were listed as living with them, as was Palmer, John's son by Mary Reed, and a son named Ernest (Evert). No information has been found for Ernest (Evert).8 John H. Gilliland and Saphrona Day appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Noble township, Ozark County, Missouri, enumerated 30 April 1910. Their children Arena "Ranie", Powerley and Olga were listed as living with them, as was John's son Palmer.9
